PSA to keep your vents and exhausts clear of snow!
Don’t forget to clear around your home’s dryer vent cover and other exhausts like a water heater or a furnace exhaust to ensure snow isn’t blocking them! These appliances need to "breathe" and snow blocking your dryer vent cover and other exhausts can cause many problems:
- Increased lint build up in clothes dryers
- Overheating your appliance
- Fire risk from overheating your appliances
- If you have a gas appliance, carbon monoxide poisoning
We recommend leaving at least 6 inches of space between the snow mound, and where your vents exit. While both your dryer vent and other exhausts produce warmer than freezing air, sometimes it’s not enough to melt the snow covering the vent.
Pictured is a vent we serviced today that was close to being blocked by the snow, and a guide photo we found for your other exhausts.
Your exhausts can look different from the ones pictured, so if you want to play it safe, just dig out any pipes or vent covers that come out from the walls of your home.
If you want to go the extra mile, consider making sure your fire hydrants are dug out to be easily accessible in the worst case your neighbour has an emergency.
