🌱 DPES Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Myrna Simpson

New research from Dr. Simpson reveals that tiny soil microbes may be limiting how much carbon can be stored in soil—raising important questions about climate change solutions. While soil has long been viewed as a powerful carbon sink, this study highlights how complex biological processes can influence its true potential.

As she explains,
“Thirty years of annual extra litter was not able to increase carbon storage in the soil.”

As a faculty member in the DPES, Dr. Simpson’s work is helping reshape how we understand carbon storage and the role of ecosystems in a changing climate.
