Dr. Tan recently shared how the award helped create the capacity for her and STEMedge Academy Inc. to volunteer their time and expertise with Binche Whut’en youth. Beginning with the first Cultural Shin Science Camp, this work grew into three summers of hands-on science learning, cultural connection, relationship-building, and collaboration with youth, community facilitators, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers.

Every September, thousands of CPA candidates across Canada sit down to write the Common Final Examination (CFE). Countless hours are spent practicing case writing, performing financial statement analysis, and identifying business risks under tight time constraints. At the time, it feels like it’s all about passing the exam developed by Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada).

In hindsight, those exercises turned out to be some of the best practical training.

Today, for Mantella Corporation, one of the most valuable applications of this training is evaluating the financial health of prospective commercial tenants.

When reviewing tenant financial statements, our team is asking many of the same questions we practiced during the CFE:

• Is the business generating sustainable cash flow?
• Are there liquidity concerns that could impact rent payments?
• How leveraged is the company?
• Are recent profits supported by operations, or driven by one-time events?
• What trends may emerge in the future?
• What risks aren’t immediately obvious from the financials alone?

A lease isn’t just about the space; it’s about the long-term ability of a business to meet its obligations.

Financial statement analysis helps us make more informed leasing decisions, manage risk, build stronger tenant relationships over the long term, potentially convert them to buyers if applicable, and maximize returns for our investors.
