CIGRE's STUDIES SHOWED THAT ONE OF EVERY 200 POWER TRANSFORMERS FAILS EACH YEAR!

It is enormous capital annual loss (transformer replacement/repair costs, lost production, and penalties).

Power Transformers are one of the most expensive and vital power network elements. There have been many reliability and failure causes studies performed in the past covering different aspects such as Cigre TB 767, C57.93-2019 - IEEE Guide for Installation and Maintenance of Liquid-Immersed Power Transformers.

New materials are available on the market and technology is improving but on the other hand the market is pushing the design to reduced end prices. The effect of this is that the failure rate is not decreasing. 60 years ago, transformers were designed with 2 tons transformer oil per MWA. Now it is reduced 7 times to 2 tones per 14 MWA. The power and voltage levels are constantly growing and are now >7 times higher than 60 years ago.

Proper trainings can improve maintenance practices, and this can slightly reduce the failure rates by 20%. But the design will keep on pushing the limits and Transformers will continue to fail.

The challenge of technological improvement will be to reduce the rest of the 80% of failures or at least reduce their impact. With the monitoring possibilities available today all failures can be detected at the very early stage often resulting in millions of USD savings per failure.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO MONITOR TRANSFORMER SUBSIDIARY EQUIPMENT SUCH AS SURGE ARRESTERS?

About 20 % of transformer faults are from auxiliary equipment failures. The source of the failure can vary from Current or Voltage Transformers, Surge Arresters or insulation elements like Bushings and Insulators.

The insulation breakdown in any of these elements immediately results in short circuit which generally causes winding deformation and permanent damage inside the transformer.

It Is very unfortunate when something like this occurs, when some very inexpensive equipment that cost fraction (only 1/1000th of the transformers cost), to cause million of USD losses in a second. These occurrences can and should be prevented. Regular testing is generally good for following aging trends. But in quite a significant number of cases you might consider yourself a very lucky person if you are able to detect the failure in the earliest stage with testing alone. This is because the failure rate of every equipment is best described with the bathtub curve. Even lifetime calculation and replacement will not help cover the first third of the failures.

The SA-LCM was designed according to the recommendations of the IEC 60099-5 for Surge arresters’ leakage current monitoring. It is a clamp on box which monitors leakage current, 3rd harmonic and capacitive currents and gives wireless early warning of fault in the earliest stage.

Understand the thermal expansion of your stator /rotor by air gap pole profile monitoring. Understand and predict your rotor to ground or inter windings faults by flux monitoring. Detect and trend the stator insulation quality. Predict and understand the mechanical faults and balance them.
