Beautiful day out in Osoyoos with the big bosses! Osoyoos soils are extra sandy and have a harder time sustaining bacterial life. Without the proper microbiome presence, vine growth struggles and crop quality suffers. We have been working with vineyards in Osoyoos, helping them to implement simple and economic soil treatments that help sustain the microbiome, helping to minimize drainage, improve soil aggregation, water retention, and nutrition uptake.

We still have a few weeks left for testing before bud break. Give us call for a free consultation. Results and recommendations are provided within 3-4 days from the date of sample collection.

We have successfully tested our first Cherry Orchard! This orchard has been seeing areas with struggling tree growth and low crop quality. This orchard has high variability of growth with some sections also showing strong tree growth and exceptional crop quality. As expected the results from the microbiome analysis identified that the soils where trees are struggling to grow and are producing lower quality fruit are in need of bacterial recovery (pictures 1 and 2), while the sections where the trees all look strong and have been producing good quality fruit have soils with robust microbial presence (pictures 3).

Certain simple and economical soil treatments have been recommended to help recover the microbiome in the problem areas. The recovery of bacterial life in these sections will:
1: help improve soil aggregation, which will allow for better moisture retention, which will result in less drainage of nutrients and water
2: make nutrient processing more efficient, improving nutrient availability for plant absorption

Happy start to soil recovery season. We couldn’t be happier with the results of this beautiful vineyard. This particular block had been troublesome for some time. Leaves on the vines were exhibiting stunted growth from the vines chocking off sections off the trunks. The soil in this particular block is very sandy and has shown trouble sustaining the microbiome, therefore we suspect nutrient and water retention in the soil was substantially low and were not being absorbed efficiently by the vines, therefore, the older vines were pulled out and new ones planted last May.
We aimed to increase the microbiome in this block with very simple and economical soil treatments. As a result, the life in the soil has increased by almost 20% so far and the new vines are showing strong growth. The owners are planning on continuing the treatment throughout this year to continue to sustain the bacterial recovery and growth. We will follow up with more updates on this vineyard this spring. We are hopeful that with a stronger and well balanced bacterial presence in the soil, these vines will continue to grow strong and a will produce beautiful crops for years to come.

Well it looks like winter is peaking it’s head a bit this week, which won’t allow us to start sampling earlier this year. It looks like we’ll have about 7 weeks tops to get samples done and treatments on the ground before buds break so if you haven’t booked your consultation yet please give us a call or send us an email over the next few days. If you are doing replants we have time until approximately two weeks prior to planting.
Hope everyone is staying warm!

Happy New Year! grape and orchard growing community! It’s about that time to start thinking about the health of your soils for this growing season. The vines and trees are coming out of a phenomenal high yielding crop year so let’s keep it going and let’s take care of the soil’s microbiome and make sure it will continue to help improve the health of your plants and crops. Over 200 acres were tested and treated last year and the results far exceeded our expectations.

Call, email, or message and book your free consultation! We do have limited time to get samples done so treatments can be put down before buds break.

Remember testing your soil with us qualifies your expenditures for Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SRED) credits.

Beautiful canopy, beautiful healthy strong looking vines, and a beautiful crop as far as the eye can see.

Two years ago the owner of this vineyard thought he was going to have to pull all the vines because they were getting old and the crop had been on a steady decline.
He gave us a call we tested the soil and found it needed recovery. We started work on bringing the soils back to life with minor and economical adjustments.
One year ago the owner was told he might loose his vines to winter damage. We continued to test the soil and he continued to treat it as recommended. That spring he experienced only 1% loss of his vines. The plants came back stronger and healthier than the previous year and the soil had a microbiome growth recovery of at least 100% across the entire vineyard. The soils had improved in structure in every block which led to better water retention in the slants and improved nutrient cycling and transport.
Fast forward to the present. Soils are healthy, plants are beautiful and strong and the vineyard has produced a crop that has far exceeded their expectations.

Congratulations Upper Bench. We are so grateful for the opportunity to work with you over the last two years and so happy to see this beautiful crop. We can’t wait to taste the results 🥰🍷🍷🍷! Thank you for your continued trust!

This year’s harvest has provided us with amazing results. The pictures below allow us to show, yet again, the impact unbalanced soils with low bacterial presence can have on plant health and crop quality. The pictures were taken in a 3 acre block of Chardonnay. This block was tested on a per acre basis in the spring. The results showed that acre #1 had unbalanced soil, acre #2 had good balanced soil with good levels of bacteria, and acre #3 had really healthy balanced soil with exceptional level of bacteria. Unfortunately, soil amendments were unable to be done to acre #1 this past spring, therefore, the soil in this acre remains unbalanced.

Pictures 1-3 belong to acre #1. Plants had lots of secondary vines, frequency of trunk removal was fairly high in this section, vines produced a lot less canopy than the other two acres. The crop for this section is scarce and doesn’t appear to be very healthy.
Pictures 3-6 belong to acre #3. This acre had lower frequency of trunk removal, plants produced a lush, healthy looking canopy, and the vines are full of healthy looking bunches.

Hello Harvest Time! And hello soil check time! We’ve been busy out doing soil spot checks, crop checks and seedling checks. This is the best time of the year to demonstrate the importance and the impact healthy and unhealthy, unbalanced soils can have on your crops. Nope it’s not just weather, the health and balance of the microbiome will make a world of a difference on the health, strength, growth and survival of you newly planted vines.

All the pictures below show vines planted in the same vineyard. This vineyard has highly variable soil throughout and we have been working with them to return the overall health of the soil to improve vine survival and to stabilize troublesome spots. It is still a work in progress but we are getting there. About 70% of the vineyard’s soil has been properly restored, but unfortunately there’s still work to be done.

Picture 1: stagnant growth can be seen as well as proper growing vines surrounding the struggling vines. The soil in this particular is section continues to be very low in bacterial presence.
Picture 2: again stagnant growth surrounded by proper growing vines. The soil in this section is unbalanced meaning the expected levels of the needed bacterial groups are not present.
Picture 3: beautiful strong and healthy vines growing in fully restored and balanced soil. The microbiome level in this section is high and the major bacterial groups we screen for are all in the desired levels.
