Mathieya Alatini’s name might come to mind when you think of innovations and advances in northern governance, renewable energy and partnerships. She’s a capable and experienced leader, known for trailblazing in her community of Burwash Landing. s of two very productive terms serving as Chief of Kluane First Nation, Mathieya is bringing her experience and energy to her Liberal candidacy as the representative in the Kluane riding. As a member of the Crow Clan (Kajat), and oldest of 11 siblings, Mathieya has extensive family and community connections in Yukon. Growing up, Mathieya was fortunate to experience both a traditional and modern way of living, spending her formative years living off the land with her family on shores of Kluane Lake. She has lived in Victoria and Vancouver where she pursued her education and met her husband, Tevita. As children, Tevita and Mathieya each experienced the traditional teachings of their cultures and had many opportunities to travel. They have ensured that their own children, Lenita and Malakai, have the same opportunities for growth and discovery. Mathieya holds a Degree in Commerce from the University of Victoria and like many Yukoners, has worked in several different industries from tourism, construction, mining to Federal and FN Governments and of course as Chief. During her 7 years working for the Federal Department of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) in British Columbia she was responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of capital infrastructure and green energy projects totaling in excess of $400 million dollars for several First Nations, which at one point encompassed 43 different communities. Under Mathieya’s leadership, Kluane First Nation had a vision for creating energy self-sufficiency and building economic resilience. In pursuit of green energy, the installation of solar panels, the expansion of biomass, drilling a geothermal well for heating and a year round greenhouse were achieved. The planning and funding for the installation of three 100KW wind turbines is nearing completion and will be going to construction in 2017. These projects were possible through partnerships with industry, other Yukon First Nations, Yukon Government and several Federal Departments. Mathieya will bring her ability to skillfully guide partnerships and create non-partisan collaborations to deliver tangible results for the Kluane Riding. Her work ethic and vision have earned her a reputation as a leader who can get things done “in a good way”.
