Big oil companies are spending millions to portray themselves as taking action on climate change, but their investments and lobbying activities don't live up to their planet-friendly claims.

British think-tank, InfluenceMap, has released a scathing report about the efforts of 5 major oil and gas companies to "greenwash" their activities and record profits, and portray themselves as pro-climate to the public. According to InfluenceMap, these oil and gas companies highlight their support for the effort to transition away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy, and are focused on support for emissions reductions.

However, on average, just 12% of their capital expenditure budgets are going toward what the companies consider low-carbon or renewable activities. And they continue to lobby policymakers to lock fossil fuels into climate policy, including the encouragement of new oil and gas development.

We must continue to fight misinformation by the oil and gas industry. Fossil fuels contribute to climate change. Climate change is killing our planet.

According to Natural Resources Canada, roughly 293,000 people were directly employed in Canada's energy sector in 2020. There are estimates that this number will increase to 639,000 jobs by 2030, particularly jobs in EV technology, low carbon electricity, building technology, battery storage, biofuels, and as energy advisors and consultants.

The question, however, will Canada be ready to meet the increased job demands in clean energy? Are we doing enough to help those losing their jobs in 'traditional industries', but need to develop new skills?
