Former deputy mines minister Victor Kasongo Shomary, has acquired two new tin concessions from Societe aurifere du Kivu et du Maniema (Sakima – public). Congo Premier owns its own tin smelter (AMI 302), and the blocks had been coveted by the MMR group controlled by Indian national Chetan Chug(AMI 356). The award came after a bidding round organized by the Comite de Pilotage de la Reforme des Entreprises Publiques (Copirep). Chug, who is accustomed to direct transactions, did not take part in the auction. Shomary is seeking funding to beef up his iron output. In landing the two concessions, he now has what it takes to regularly supply his smelter, which had catered to small-scale producers up to now.
