Master Thesis Collaboration: From Challenge to Opportunity

We’re proud to collaborate with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich on Michael’s master’s thesis. Michael is currently conducting fieldwork in southern Spain to evaluate the benefits of integrating Tutavir into conventional greenhouse tomato production strategies.

When the original plan for his thesis became unfeasible due to the absence of the target pest in the trial field, Michael worked closely with Andermatt Biocontrol Suisse and Andermatt Iberia to quickly adapt the project. He proactively shifted focus to an alternative pest and crop, allowing the fieldwork to continue successfully.

This flexible, adaptable and solution-driven mindset reflects Andermatt’s values and culture: continuously seeking new opportunities and responding proactively to changing market conditions and unexpected challenges.

We look forward to the insights that will emerge from this trial and wish Michael every success on this exciting phase of his research.

Field results that matter 🌱

Last season, Tutavir was evaluated in multiple in-field strategy trials in Spain. When incorporated into a standard program, results showed up to 50% less plant damage.

These trials will continue this season as we move closer towards registration and product launch.

Keep an eye out for our next post highlighting a master thesis collaboration linked to these ongoing trials.

🌱 Today is the International Day for Biological Diversity, a vital reminder that healthy food systems rely on nature’s own complexity.

At Andermatt, our biological crop protection solutions are engineered to work with natural systems rather than against them.

Industry insights show that biologicals are essential for long-term farm viability because of their narrow host range. Unlike broad-spectrum synthetic pesticides, these targeted solutions provide several key advantages for the field:

- They target specific pests without causing unnecessary harm to the broader ecosystem.
- Biologicals can be used alongside released beneficial insects to allow for a truly integrated pest management (IPM) strategy.
- By protecting indigenous beneficial populations already present in the field, you maintain a natural defense layer.
- While conventional sprays like pyrethroids often trigger spider mite flares by wiping out predators, biologicals keep this delicate balance intact.

Sustainable, resilient agriculture relies on solutions that are effective for the crop and kind to the environment. By choosing targeted biologicals, growers protect the biodiversity that sustains their land.

Bees may be small, but their impact is enormous 🐝

This World Bee Day, we are raising awareness of the vital role pollinators play in sustaining ecosystems and global food production. Healthy honey bee populations are essential for resilient, productive agriculture.

At Andermatt, our commitment to working with nature extends to supporting honey bee health. Through Andermatt BioVet, we develop specialized solutions that help protect honey bees from key threats like Varroa mites, supporting stronger and healthier colonies worldwide.

Safeguarding honey bees means safeguarding our future.

Before biological crop protection became a global movement, one scientist was already proving its potential.

Dr. Michael “Mike” Morris played a pioneering role in shaping biological control in South Africa, challenging conventional thinking and demonstrating that nature itself can be one of agriculture’s most powerful tools.

From early research breakthroughs to building a makeshift home laboratory, Mike’s journey is one of innovation, resilience, and belief in doing things differently. His work laid the foundation for what would later become Andermatt PHP, helping bring practical, scalable biological solutions to farmers.

This is more than a story about science; it’s about vision, perseverance, and the people behind the progress.

Strengthening Beneficial Insect Populations in Crop Protection 🌱

Last season, Tutavir was evaluated in several on-farm strategy trials in the Netherlands. When included in a standard program alongside mating disruption, beneficial insects and other insecticides, results showed a clear advantage in preserving and supporting the establishment of beneficial insect populations, while also delaying the need for stronger interventions for Tuta control.

Strategy trials will continue this season as we move towards registration and product launch.
