Physical target:

Heart rate, pace, power or intensity.

Cognitive target:

Task demand, duration, accuracy, reaction or another relevant measure.

Otherwise the session becomes:

Ride and do a cognitive task.

That's activity.

Programming requires constraints.

Know what physical output should look like.

Know what cognitive demand should look like.

Then monitor whether the athlete can maintain both.

But what if they're already fast enough when fresh?

What if the real problem is that their reaction time deteriorates by 15% under sustained demand?

Now the target changes.

Perhaps another 10 milliseconds at baseline isn't the biggest opportunity.

Perhaps maintaining their existing performance for longer is.

This is why assessment should come before prescription.

Without understanding the performance profile, we're simply training the metric that looks easiest to improve.
