How do you calculate the carbon footprint of hundreds of component variants? 🌱

A small team at our production plant in Sant'Antonino, Switzerland, faced exactly that question. This plant produces sub-components that are incorporated into a range of Interroll products manufactured in our plants across the globe. Assessing every variant by hand would have taken years. So Elisabetta Brunetti, Piercarlo Balducci, Manuel Schettini, and Luca Paiola built a smarter solution.

Together with SUPSI (University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland) and in collaboration with Interroll’s Corporate Sustainability Team, they developed GRETA, an internal tool that combines core environmental benchmarks with AI algorithms. GRETA doesn't start from scratch for each variant. Instead, it estimates life-cycle impacts such as CO₂ emissions, water use, and energy consumption for the components made in Sant'Antonino.
GRETA was designed specifically for this plant's product range and does not calculate footprints for other Interroll products. Going forward, GRETA's results will serve as input for future product carbon footprint (PCF) calculations across the Group.
