It’s time to get back in the saddle

It is a long-standing tradition: May and June are dedicated to the nationwide “Bike to Work” initiative across Switzerland. And with social and environmental responsibility very close to our hearts, Uster Technologies is participating for the 11th consecutive year – this time with 32 participants divided into 8 teams.

The numbers speak for themselves: In 2025, 41 of our colleagues clocked up almost 15,350 kilometers together as part of the campaign. That was a remarkable team effort, and one that we are very proud of.

Happy international bicycle day to everyone and thank you to all our cycling enthusiasts who clip in, put on their high-vis gear, and choose to commute to work by bike.

Avoid waves!

So-called ‘waves’ of material with higher-than-normal quality deviations may follow the yarn right up to the end, thereby polluting the entire lot.

This post is dedicated to material handling and describes how simple routines can make a huge difference in preventing irregularities in yarn quality.

Carefully planned distribution of cans from various cards in the breaker draw frames, as not all cards deliver the same performance. Use color marks, numbers, etc. for identification.

No overloaded cans, stacked roving bobbins, or material friction points! All of them lead to irregularities due to pressure marks and removed or added fibers.

Live the process! In roving production, use the FIFO (First-In-First-Out) operating principle to avoid having roving bobbins of older production runs.

Machine changeover! In ring spinning and winding, you are recommended to clean machines during each article changeover, making sure that there are no spinning bobbins lying underneath. And if bobbins are found, the yarn must be sent to waste.

There are additional ‘mix-up’ risks that must be considered during the winding process. See page 15 of the Uster News Bulletin No. 52 https://bit.ly/4wWz4os

Fortunately, unacceptable yarn quality deviations can be detected during yarn clearing prior to delivery. Uster Quantum offers methods and multiple settings that can help to identify and separate cop mix-ups – and also avoid waves in the deliveries of spinners.

Improvements reported from warehouse to winding room!
As a global pioneer in denim, Orta Anadolu Ticaret ve Sanayi İşletmesi T.A.Ş. (ORTA) is well-equipped to meet the demands of the highly-competitive global textile markets. Sustainability is a key attribute of the company’s approach, with its use of regenerative cotton, organic cotton, recycled fibers, closed-loop manufacturing and water-reducing technology.

Determined to maintain sustainability and profitability, ORTA chose Uster FiberQ to support more controlled and data-driven decision-making processes.

“FiberQ introduces a significant systematic approach to the cotton blending preparation process and makes a substantial contribution to ensuring quality consistency,” says Orhan Herdem, Spinning Group Manager at ORTA.

What Uster recommends for dyed fibers:

Measure dyed fibers with Uster AFIS 6 in a stable and effective manner.

Remember that natural variation in fiber properties remains a key influencing factor.

Use measuring results of dyed fibers for spinning process optimization.

Explore fibers with your own color varieties and learn from the results.

Uster conducted an internal study on the measurement of dyed fibers and summarized the most important results in the latest Practical Case. https://l1nq.com/xhr7enx

Values like fiber length, neps, fineness, maturity, and trash were analyzed for a set of fibers and color shades, while a separate analysis focused on repeatability. Our experts compared one material of the same color to demonstrate the precision of the measurement – and yes, Uster AFIS 6 provides reproducible results for dyed fibers.

Recycling cotton is easy. Making high-quality recycled yarn is not.

Only a small fraction of post-consumer textile waste is recycled into new yarns – mainly due to quality limitations. Understanding fiber damage, opening efficiency, and raw material classes is crucial for turning textile waste into valuable yarns.

Recycled fibers vary significantly depending on their source and opening process, directly impacting spinnability, strength, and consistency. By using measurable parameters, such as fiber length, short fiber content, neps, and the new Recycling Opening Index (ROI), objective decisions can be made. Data-driven quality management is the foundation for ensuring that recycled yarns are both scalable and reliable.

“The Recycling Opening Index is a clear indicator of processability and profitability when using recycled raw materials. It is defined as the ratio of opened fibers to remaining yarn pieces. A low ROI leads to process disruptions in the spinning process, increased yarn irregularity, weak spots, and uneven surface structures,” says Oswald Baldischwieler.

Oswald Baldischwieler, Vice President Product Solutions at Uster Technologies, delivered a presentation at the recent International Cotton Conference in Bremen (Germany), explaining the impact of ROI in detail and sharing best practices for managing yarn quality in mechanical cotton recycling.

Last week, Techtextil proved once again why it is such an important meeting point for the global textile industry. After a somewhat quiet start, visitor engagement quickly gained momentum. We were delighted to welcome a truly international audience, with participants from across Europe, India, Turkey, as well as the USA and South America.

This year, one topic that stood out in particular from the many conversations was automation. The demand for solutions that reduce manual effort, especially in material handling and repetitive processes, is growing rapidly. Our Uster Fabriq Vision 2 attracted attention from both new contacts and established customers. Modules for reducing over-detection and enabling efficient image classification were seen as a strong and practical response to one of the industry’s key pain points: the time-consuming nature of manual image evaluation.

“Fabriq Vision 2 combines proven defect detection reliability with the latest AI technologies. This allows users to achieve consistent quality results while working with transparent, intuitive workflows that significantly reduce complexity and adoption time,” says Ingo Kiefer, Senior Textile Technologist at Uster Technologies. “With this solution, we set out to create a user-centric system design built for data-driven decision-making, and the conversations at Techtextil showed that we are on the right track.”

We look forward to meeting you again in June at ITM 2026 in Istanbul or before then in our virtual showroom: https://www.uster.com/about-uster/welcome-to-virtual-showroom/

It is always a great pleasure for Uster to host invited spinners from around the world.

Last week, we welcomed representatives of Nitin Spinners and Sudiva Spinners, two Indian spinning mills that have borne the Usterized designation for many years.

K. S. Jindal (DGM QA) and P. K. Singh (DGM QA) from Nitin Spinners and Aadesh Atre (AGM QA and management representative) from Sudiva Spinners participated in an executive training program at our headquarters in Switzerland.

The program focused on in-depth technical sessions with our Textile Technology team, clearly aimed at optimizing spinning mill performance in terms of quality. On the final day, a dedicated AFIS 6 webinar brought the technical agenda to a successful conclusion. In addition, the visit included a tour of our production and development facilities and a guided tour of the Uster Museum, which opened last fall to celebrate our 150th anniversary.

We sincerely thank our customers for their visit, the open discussions, and the valuable exchange of experience.
