Today, generators are as common as sand on the beach. But do you know how they came about?

In 1663, German scientist, Otto van Guericke created the first electric generator. It produced static electricity when friction was applied. Van Guericke’s machine composed of a glass globe that encased a sulfur ball.

The globe was mounted to allow it to be rotated using a crank. When rubbed with a pad, the ball produced a static electric spark.

On September 30, 1882, a house in Appleton, Wisconsin owned by Henry Rogers became the first ever to be illuminated using electricity. The home is called Hearthstone and still stands today as a historic museum.

Chi is not a new name to such creations. In 2019, he went viral after displaying prototypes of heavy duty machinery made from papers.

Our Lady of Victory Cathedral, Yaoundé

Located at Poste Centrale, heart of the capital City, Yaoundé, the cathedral is an epitome of the Roman Catholic faith, the most popular in the country.

It serves the metropolitan Archdiocese of Yaoundé, and is a fellowship temple for thousands of Roman Catholic Christian faithful every day. It was consecrated in 1955.

Its architecture is as popular as its use, with a space capacity for about 5,000 persons.

Interestingly, after over 50 years, its construction is yet to be complete.

Truly, old is gold.

La Nouvelle Liberte

Erected in 1996, the statue is made of waste material and is found at Rond Point Deido, the entry point to the town of Douala from the South West region.

It has emerged to become the city’s landmark artistic representation, spanning 5 meters 12 meters high and weighing 8 tons.

It is also nicknamed Njo Njo (or Juju) of Deido (monster of Deido).

It was erected by artist, Joseph-Francis Sumegne who got inspired by engravings on pillars of royal structures in Cameroon’s West.

New Wouri bridge

The Wouri Bridge(s) in Douala is the longest in the entire nation of Cameroon. A first was built in the 1950s and links Bonaberi and the South West region in general to Douala.

The second bridge was commissioned in December 2018 after the first became limited and could not permit for smooth flow of traffic. The 1800m-long structure remains a beauty to behold, especially when lit up by the brilliant road lights at night.

The Douala Grand Mall is one of Douala’s ultramodern shopping facilities open to thousands daily.

Built on a floor space of close to 38,000 meters square, it possesses 18,500 meters square of retail space. It contains 142 retail stores, 18 restaurants, a movie theatre and a supermarket.

It went operational on November 17, 2020.

It has lived through the world wars, as well as multiple challenging times including the ongoing armed conflict in the North Wes and South West regions.

Its longevity alone is a pulling factor for the many that visit to get a glimpse of the age old structure.
