Operational Data and Application of Anhui Sanxing Resin in a 18,000 m³/day Softened Water Project for a Large Petrochemical Complex in China

Softened water treatment is critical to the operational safety of large-scale refinery projects. This paper analyzes real-world operational data to explore the application and performance of Sanxing Resin’s 001×7 strong acid cation exchange resin in boiler water pretreatment and circulating water softening.

Project Background and Challenges

With a total investment exceeding $5 billion and a refining capacity of 10 million tons in north China, feedwater is surface water with high Fe and COD concentration. Hardness is 220-450ppm but during saltwater intrusion period, hardness may double. All these adversely affected resin service lives. To ensure continuous production and consistent effluent hardness, the facility imposes near-stringent requirements on the stability of the water softening system.
The specific softened water treatment process adopted by the refinery is as follows:
Raw Water

Key Challenges Before Adopting the Sanxing Resin Solution
Prior to implementing the Sanxing resin solution, the plant faced several common industry challenges:

Significant Fluctuations in Feedwater Quality:
Due to seasonal variations and upstream process influences, the hardness of incoming water fluctuated frequently. This resulted in a reduction in the effective working exchange capacity of the existing resin and shortened the service cycle of the system.

High Operating Costs:
Lower-quality resins required frequent regeneration, leading to substantial consumption of acid and water. In addition, high resin breakage rates contributed to consistently elevated annual operating costs.

Equipment Safety Risks:
Due to fluctuations in feedwater quality, the hardness of the treated water occasionally exceeded acceptable limits, posing a risk of boiler scaling and seriously threatening the safe operation of the integrated refining facility.

Product Stability: Utilizing the suspension polymerization process, Sanxing 001×7 delivers a working exchange capacity comparable to international brands and significantly exceeding other domestic products. In cases of influent water quality fluctuations—especially variations in hardness—the superior effluent quality of Sanxing resin safeguards the continuity and stability of downstream processes.
After 5 years of operation, the working exchange capacity of Sanxing resin remains similar to imported resins, decreasing from 1.2 eq/L in the first year to 1.1 eq/L in the fifth. In contrast, the initial capacity of low-end domestic brands is only 0.9 eq/L, dropping to 0.6 eq/L by the fifth year, at which point they lose all operational value and must be replaced.

Reduced Acid and Water Consumption:
Compared with international premium brands and Sanxing resin, lower-end domestic products consume significantly more acid and water. Over a five-year operating cycle, this results in more than one million RMB in additional regeneration costs.

Lower Procurement Cost:
Compared with imported brands, the procurement cost of Sanxing resin is approximately 58% of that of imported products. Although lower-end domestic resins cost around 49% of imported brands(the resin was replaced after five years of use due to breakage and low working exchange capacity).

How Sanxing Helped the Client Overcome Challenges
During project implementation, Sanxing Resin not only supplied high-quality products but also delivered full lifecycle technical support:

Precise Selection:
Optimized resin bed depth and flow rate reduced effluent hardness to near 0 mmol/L, ensuring safe boiler operation.
Cost Reduction:
Regeneration cycles increased by 25%–33%, saving over 1 million RMB annually in acid and water costs.
Reliable Support:
Full-process technical support with 24-hour response ensured stable system performance.

Challenges and Case Analysis of Demineralized Water in Thermal Power Plants

The UK government has allowed strategically significant projects such as AI data centers to “jump the queue” for priority access to the power grid. This move aims to address severe grid connection backlogs caused by a 460% surge in demand and to stimulate economic growth. However, the decision has raised strong concerns among homebuilders, who argue that prioritizing high-energy-consuming data centers could stall housing construction in regions with limited power capacity. As a result, the government faces a difficult trade-off between advancing AI leadership and addressing the housing shortage.
Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9dn2znzez7o

Whether it is the “competition” for grid access driven by AI data centers or the impact of geopolitical conflicts on fuel supply, both reveal a harsh reality: electricity has become an extremely valuable strategic resource. In this context, Sanxing Resin provides the industry with a cost-effective and highly reliable demineralized water solution, enabling thermal power plants to support societal operations in the AI era and during energy crises with lower costs and higher efficiency.

Demineralized water is the "blood" of thermal power plant boilers. Substandard water quality can lead to rapid scale formation and tube bursts, metal corrosion, and salt accumulation in steam turbines, resulting in a sharp drop in thermal efficiency and massive losses from unplanned downtime. Under complex operating conditions and stringent stability requirements, Sanxing mixed-bed resins, with their superior "fault tolerance" and "cost-effectiveness" compared to pure membrane processes, serve as the ultimate line of defense for the safe operation and stable output of power units.

By implementing the deep demineralization solution from Sanxing Resin, a large-scale 2×660 MW thermal power plant in Hubei Province, China, has successfully achieved the "optimal balance" between water quality safety and operational efficiency.

Process Flow:
Raw Water → MMF → UF → 2 stage RO → Mixed Bed (001×7MB+ 201×7MB) → Boiler feedwater
The boiler makeup water demand for this plant is approximately 15,000 m3/d. Raw Water Quality Profile:
Total Hardness: 80 – 250 ppm (as CaCO3)
Conductivity: 200 – 800 μS/cm
Turbidity: 5 – 50 NTU
COD:2 – 10 mg/L
SiO₂:5 – 25 mg/L
pH:6.5 – 8.5。

The Chinese government requires that industrial boiler feedwater meet the following standards:
Conductivity (25°C): ≤ 0.2 μS/cm
Silica: ≤ 20 μg/L
Sodium: ≤ 10 μg/L
Hardness: ≈ 0 (Below detection limit)
Iron: ≤ 10 μg/L
Copper: ≤ 5 μg/L

To meet the plant's specific requirements, we implemented a combination of 001×7MB Strong Acid Cation Resin and 201×7MB Strong Base Anion Resin for the mixed-bed system. The core advantages are demonstrated across the following three dimensions:

1. Ultimate Water Quality: Far Exceeding National Standards
The system's effluent resistivity remains stable at ≥ 10 MΩ·cm, far exceeding the typical requirements for boiler makeup water set by the national GB/T 12145 standard. At a temperature of 25°C, conductivity is consistently maintained at < 0.1 µS/cm with silica levels < 5 ppb, providing an ultra-pure water quality guarantee for the long-term safe operation of the boilers.

2. Long-term Stability: Benchmarked Against Global Tier-1 Brands
Throughout a 5-year operational cycle, Sanxing mixed-bed resins have demonstrated a working exchange capacity highly similar to that of international Tier-1 brands, with a performance gap of less than 10%. This exceptional anti-degradation capability ensures that the system maintains outstanding operational stability without the need for frequent resin replacement over its entire lifecycle.

3. Superior Economic Value: Dual Optimization of CAPEX and OPEX

Compared with Global Tier-1 Brands: While maintaining 1:1 performance parity, Sanxing’s CAPEX (purchase cost) is reduced by 47%, significantly easing the project's initial investment pressure.

Comparison with Mid-to-Low End Brands: While mid-to-low end brands may offer a marginal advantage of approximately 10% in procurement price, Sanxing resins significantly reduce operational expenditure (OPEX) by about $190,000 through longer service life and lower regeneration frequency(Our total resin purchasing price is $140,000). By delivering higher overall cost-effectiveness, we create direct long-term economic benefits for our customers.

Choosing Sanxing means choosing international Tier-1 performance and long-term peace of mind. In this project, Sanxing’s mixed-bed resins have operated stably for 5 years, drastically cutting acid, alkali, and water consumption as well as O&M costs by approximately $190,000 compared to mid-to-low end brands. Backed by 20 years of technical expertise and 24-hour response, we provide you with efficient, low-cost, and professional water treatment assurance.

One Typical Case Study of Boiler-Feed Water Process and Mixed Bed Analysis
In July 2010, a large-scale papermaking enterprise in Hunan Province, China, constructed a new 400,000-ton paper production line. Due to its proximity to the Xiangjiang River, water drawn from the river is treated to serve as boiler makeup water. The influent water quality of the Xiangjiang River is as in the following pictures.

The raw water is characterized by low hardness, but elevated levels of ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, iron, and manganese, along with high turbidity during the flood season. Based on this influent water quality, the engineering company designed the following boiler makeup water process flow:
Raw Water → Flocculation & Clarification → Sand Filtration → Activated Carbon → Security Filtration → 1st Stage RO → Mixed Bed → Boiler Makeup Water
Dow BW30-400 membrane elements are utilized for the reverse osmosis system, while Sanxing 001x7MB and 201x7MB resins are employed in the mixed bed. The treated product water quality reaches:
Electrical Resistivity: 8-12 MΩ·cm
Total Hardness: ≈ 0 mg/L(as CaCO₃ )

Silicon Dioxide (SiO₂): 5–10 μg/L(ppb)
Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn): Close to or below the detection limit (< 10 μg/L)
Throughout the eight-year operational lifespan of the Sanxing mixed bed resins, the treated water quality consistently surpassed national standards. At the same time, due to long time operation, the water production cycle gradually shortened, as illustrated in the figure below. Over this eight-year period, the product water resistivity consistently remained above 8 MΩ·cm, with total hardness at 0, and silicon dioxide below 10 ug/L. In the ninth year, the resins were replaced due to the regeneration cycles issue.
Process Analysis of the Client's System:
During the flood season, the river carries a high sediment load, with turbidity frequently reaching several hundred NTU. The pre-treatment system (flocculation & sedimentation) is capable of reducing this turbidity to a low value. During the dry season, the reduced water flow diminishes the system's dilution capacity, causing the concentrations of ammonia nitrogen, iron, and manganese to climb significantly. Furthermore, the Xiangjiang River is rich in bottom sediment deposits, causing the iron and manganese content in the water to frequently exceed 0.3 mg/L during the dry season. Therefore, enhanced coagulation-sedimentation combined with multi-media filtration must be utilized, and highly efficient activated carbon adsorption is essential to remove organic matter and residual heavy metal ions that would otherwise impact the whiteness of the paper.
In the post-treatment section, the adoption of the traditional "Security Filtration → 1st Stage RO → Mixed Bed" process successfully and excellently met national standards. Furthermore, the membranes operated for six years and the resins operated for eight years with zero safety incidents throughout the entire operational lifespan. This fully demonstrates the exceptional reliability of the process design, pre-treatment system, and product quality.

The Sweetness on Your Taste: Our "Pure Protection" Lies Behind It!

At a price point of 5,500+ RMB/ton ($800/ton), cane sugar has hit a "redline" for many producers. In contrast, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)—priced at only 2,500 RMB/ton ($364/ton) with a 1.4:1 replacement ratio—has become the industry’s recognized "profit engine," offering nearly 36% in cost savings. However, saving money should never come at the expense of your brand's reputation. Many manufacturers are concerned: What if the deashing process fails to meet standards? What if poor thermal stability leads to yellowing or concentration issues? Don't let these technical bottlenecks stand between you and a 2,000 RMB/ton profit margin.

Recently, a leading domestic HFCS producer (with an annual capacity of 300,000 tons) delivered an impressive performance report:In their core "Two-Stage Four-Column" (SAC-WBA-SAC-WBA) ion exchange system, the plant fully implemented SanXing D001 (Strong Acid Cation) and D301 (Weak Base Anion) resins. The total resin volume reached 300 m3, consisting of 150 m3 of D001 and 150 m3 of D301.

In a classic Sorbitol deashing case study, a client compared 100 m3 of ion exchange resins (SAC/SBA) from a top-tier international brand alongside 100 m3 of SanXing resins. Over a three-year operational cycle, SanXing resins demonstrated a performance curve and attrition rate nearly identical to the global brand. More importantly, this parity in performance was achieved with a significant 40% reduction in CAPEX.

To achieve this "sweetness on the tongue," what transformations have we brought to the table?

Pure & Flawless: We have reduced the ash content in the syrup to an extremely low level of ≤ 0.05%. This significantly enhances syrup quality and eliminates downstream ash interference, ensuring safe and stable operations. Consumers can enjoy products like Coca-Cola and Pepsi with absolute peace of mind regarding safety and purity.

Stable Quality: Our solution enhances the thermal stability of the syrup. Whether subjected to high-temperature cooking or cold storage, the color, clarity, and taste remain consistent and unchanged.

Cost Savings: We offer a 20% reduction in resin procurement costs compared to top-tier Chinese brands. With operational expenses remaining stable, the client's Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is effectively lowered.

Responsive Technical Support: SanXing Resin boasts a collective 70+ years of technical maintenance expertise. We guarantee an online solution within 3 hours and an on-site technical response within 3 days whenever operational issues arise.
