This valve stem is undergoing hardness inspection.
We use a Rockwell hardness tester. The principle is straightforward: a diamond indenter or carbide ball is pressed into the material surface under a specific load, and the hardness value is determined by measuring the residual indentation depth.
After the major load is applied, the indenter continues to pe*****te. Once the load is removed, the residual depth is measured. The shallower the indentation, the higher the hardness.
Advantages:
Fast operation — suitable for shop-floor batch testing
Small indentation — minimal impact on finished parts
Direct reading — no microscope required
Limitations:
Not ideal for very thin parts or shallow hardened layers
Requires relatively smooth surface finish
For valve stems, Rockwell is the preferred choice — fast, reliable, and non-damaging to finished surfaces.

Every batch of Inconel 718 passes through this "microscopic inspection" before leaving our facility. Under a metallurgical microscope, we evaluate:
Grain Size (ASTM standard) : Ensuring uniform grain size — this directly affects strength and toughness.
Microstructural Uniformity : Checking for severe segregation or abnormal structures.
Precipitate Phase Distribution : Through etching, confirming the absence of harmful phases that could compromise performance.

Inconel 718 parts detected with hardness above specification — what can be done?

Re-solution treatment + re-aging.

Heat the material back to solution temperature, re-dissolve the precipitates, then precisely control the cooling rate, followed by re-aging — allowing the strengthening phases to re-precipitate uniformly, bringing hardness back into target range.

This is not rework. It's a commitment to quality without compromise.
