Rapid prototyping is an indispensable prototyping process in the product development stage. Before injection mold making and mass production, 3D CAD drawings are converted into physical prototypes to verify the product's appearance, assembly clearances, structural strength, and actual functionality. Our factory's three main prototype manufacturing processes are: 3D printing, CNC machining, and silicone molding.
1. 3D Printing (SLA / FDM / SLS)
3D printing is an additive manufacturing technology that stacks parts layer by layer according to 3D drawings. The main processes are SLA, FDM, and SLS: SLA relies on ultraviolet light to cure liquid resin, offering high precision and a smooth surface, primarily used for appearance prototypes; FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) is cost-effective and often used for general functional test parts; SLS (Sintered Laser Sintering) uses powder materials to create high-strength nylon parts without the need for supports. Overall, prototyping is fast and suitable for product verification and small-batch sample production.
2. CNC Prototype Machining
CNC prototype machining is a subtractive manufacturing process that uses CNC programs to control cutting tools to mill and cut solid plastic and metal raw materials, accurately replicating the design shown in the drawings. Commonly used materials include ABS, PC, POM, aluminum alloy, and copper. Compared to 3D printing, CNC prototypes offer more realistic material colors, higher dimensional accuracy, and better surface texture, making them ideal for high-precision functional prototypes and metal structural parts prototyping.
3. Silicone Vacuum Molding
First, a prototype is created using CNC or 3D printing. Liquid silicone is then poured into the prototype to create a soft plastic mold. PU resin is then poured into the mold under vacuum to replicate the exact same plastic product. This method is inexpensive and suitable for small-batch replication of a few to dozens of pieces, often used for exhibition samples and small-batch product testing.
All prototypes can be fitted with post-processing steps such as sanding, painting, screen printing, and assembly. Once the customer's sample is confirmed and finalized, it can seamlessly connect with the development of formal injection molds and mass injection production, realizing a one-stop service from sample development to mass production delivery.
