⚡ Storage Basics #4: The truth about "2h".
⏱ Duration (h) = Energy ÷ Power. 200 MWh ÷ 100 MW = 2 h. Clean and simple — on paper.
Here's what that number actually assumes: • Rated power output • A specific temperature range • A specific end voltage • A healthy battery (SOH 100%)
In the real world — especially during typhoon season, in high ambient temperature, with a load that isn't constant — the available time is usually shorter than the nameplate figure.
❌ Common mistake: "It's a 2h system, so whatever the load, my client gets 2 hours." ✅ Truth: real discharge time depends on load current, temperature, end voltage, SOC window and ageing.
💡 What to do instead: For backup applications, size on peak load × realistic outage duration, then add margin for temperature and ageing. A system that delivers 3 days of critical load at 100% depth will be far more expensive than one that delivers 3 days at 50% depth — and only one of those is a good design.
