💡 FPI's Solution for Steelmaking Processes

To address the challenge of gas detection in steelmaking, FPI has developed a dedicated solution based on its Laser Gas Analyzer (LGA), enabling real-time, precise monitoring of CO and O₂. This helps steel enterprises reduce operating costs and optimize production processes.

Steelmaking mainly involves converting molten iron into steel using a basic oxygen furnace (BOF), or melting scrap steel and direct reduced iron in an electric arc furnace (EAF). Whether converter gas is recovered or flared (when CO concentration is low) depends on the measured concentrations of CO and O₂. Optimizing the BOF or EAF process also requires monitoring the composition of exhaust gas after secondary combustion.

Traditional paramagnetic analyzers used for converter gas recovery are limited by their sampling systems, resulting in slower response times. This time lag leads to wasted fuel resources—a challenge that FPI's solution directly addresses.

✔️ The high-speed response of the LGA helps raise BOF gas recovery rate by 3-5%.
✔️ The maintenance-free of the LGA itself means no interference to the recovery process, an additional benefit for higher recovery rate and lower operation cost.
✔️ The monitored data can be used as input into models of the BOF or EAF process which can help to improve understanding and to optimize the process.

🏭 FPI CEMS Helps Indonesian Sulfuric Acid Plant Achieve Environmental Compliance

To address challenges such as precise monitoring of low-concentration hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) during sulfuric acid production, FPI adopted "hot-wet extractive method" technology to launch the CEMS-2000 Continuous Emission Monitoring System, designed for complex industrial scenarios. Widely applicable across industries such as oil & gas and metallurgy, the system has obtained German TÜV certification, helping enterprises meet environmental regulatory requirements.

At a Phase I sulfuric acid plant in Indonesia, FPI's CEMS was put into operation for real-time H₂S monitoring. In addition, the system monitors gas component concentrations of H₂S, SO₂, NO, and O₂, while also tracking flue gas operating parameters such as humidity, temperature, pressure, and flow rate—safeguarding the safe and stable operation of the sulfuric acid plant.

In this project, the H₂S concentration range was as low as 0–35 mg/m³. Due to the extremely low measurement range and complex operating conditions, the client had searched the market for half a year without finding a suitable supplier with the necessary capabilities. Ultimately, the client turned to FPI, which provided the equipment and technical services, resulting in successful project delivery.

✔️ UV-DOAS technology allows simultaneous measurement of multiple gases, with comparative a better signal-noise ratio over conventional technology;
✔️ The hot-wet extractive sampling system avoids condensation, corrosion and chalking;
✔️ Modular system design reduces the maintenance cost and gives a more stable system performance;
✔️ Certified by German TÜV.

This collaboration brought the client not only the successful completion of the Phase I project, but also long-term trust. Subsequent Phase II–IV sulfuric acid plants have all adopted FPI's CEMS, helping the client avoid environmental compliance risks and ensuring long-term stable plant operations.

⚙️🔧 FPI Industrial Online Mass Spectrometer Helps Steel Enterprises Cut Costs and Boost Efficiency

In fields such as steel metallurgy, process control places extremely high demands on the precise control of gas component ratios. To meet this need, FPI has drawn on years of experience developing process analysis and environmental monitoring instruments, applying internationally advanced mass spectrometry technology to develop the high-performance ProMars-6000 Industrial Online Mass Spectrometer, helping steel enterprises reduce costs and increase efficiency.

On a hydrogen metallurgy production line at a steel enterprise, the ProMars-6000 has replaced the original equipment and is now running stably. Within 8 minutes, the ProMars-6000 simultaneously monitors 10 process sections and 10 key gas components—including oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen—helping the company improve monitoring efficiency.

The industrial online mass spectrometer previously used by this enterprise came with high annual maintenance costs, and spare parts lead times often exceeded six months; instrument maintenance costs and downtime risk had long been a persistent hidden hazard on the production line. FPI's ProMars-6000 Industrial Online Mass Spectrometer successfully overcame these difficulties through its high performance.

🔹 Fast Scanning Technology: Single-component analysis time is less than 0.5 seconds.
🔹 Broad Component Analysis: Capable of analyzing any gas components with mass numbers below 200 amu.
🔹 High-Precision Quadrupole Mass Analyzer: Detection limit reaches ppb level.
🔹 Dual Detectors (Faraday Cup & Electron Multiplier Tube): Automatic switching between high and low ranges.
🔹 Automatic Sensitivity Calibration: Dual-filament design with overcurrent protection and inert ion source design to prevent contamination, ensuring long-term reliable operation.

"Now, instrument maintenance and downtime costs have been reduced by 5%-10%, steel composition control accuracy is expected to improve by 5%-15%, and the scrap rate is expected to drop by 3%-5%. Annual maintenance costs have fallen by more than 70%, and on-site maintenance response now arrives within 24 hours," said the project leader of the steel plant's hydrogen metallurgy team.

🛠️💡 FPI Ironmaking Process Gas Detection Solution

To continuously monitor the gases generated during the ironmaking process—reducing metal loss and ensuring safe operation—FPI offers a solution based on its Laser Gas Analyzer (LGA), enabling continuous monitoring of CO, CO₂, H₂, and O₂, along with a combined "CO+CO₂" measurement function that helps ironmaking enterprises effectively reduce operating costs while ensuring safe production.

In the ironmaking process, continuous monitoring of CO, CO₂, H₂, and O₂ in blast furnace gas is required to control combustion efficiency in the furnace and ensure the safe operation of the bag filter. At the same time, real-time monitoring of CO content in flue gas is essential to ensure the safe operation of hot blast stoves. However, environments combining high moisture and dust impose high maintenance costs on conventional sampling systems or probes. In addition, the sampling process requires a response time of at least 20 seconds, which undermines the reliability of safety warnings.

Solution Advantages:
✔️ The LGA delivers second-level response times
✔️ In-situ laser detection, combined with continuous purge, results in virtually maintenance-free operation
✔️ Gas monitors located downstream of the bag filter not only measure constituents of the blast furnace gas, but also detect a possible leak of the bag filter
✔️ The "CO+CO₂" combination measurement in a single analyzer further reduces ownership cost
