How do I know which plug-in my electric vehicle is using ?

While learning can seem like a lot, it's pretty simple really. All electric cars use the connector which is the standard in their respective markets for level 1 and level 2 charging, North America , Europe, China , Japan, etc. Tesla was the only exception, but all of its cars come with an adapter cable to power the market standard. Tesla Level 1 or 2 charging stations can also be used by non-Tesla electric vehicles, but they need to use an adapter that can be purchased from a third party vendor. For DC fast charging, Tesla has a proprietary network of Supercharger stations that only Tesla vehicles can use, no adapter will work on these stations because there’s an authentication process. Nissan and Mitsubishi cars use the Japanese standard CHAdeMO, and virtually every other electric vehicle uses the CCS charging standard.

Five Terminals, Explained in One Diagram

PE (Protective Ground): The safety baseline, connecting the charging station, vehicle, and ground. In case of leakage, it instantly diverts the current, protecting people and equipment.

CP (Control Guide): The "communication brain" of charging, responsible for the entire communication between the vehicle and the charging station: confirming connection, transmitting charging parameters, adjusting power, and controlling start/stop.

PP (Connection Confirmation): The safety sentinel, constantly checking if the charging gun is properly inserted. Charging is prohibited if not properly inserted, eliminating the risk of poor contact.

DC+ / TC and DC- / TC: Dual responsibility for energy transmission and temperature monitoring.

DC+/DC-: Transmits high-voltage DC power for fast charging;

TC (Temperature Detection): Monitors terminal temperature in real time; immediately cuts off power in case of abnormal overheating, preventing potential hazards.

Safe Charging, Closed-Loop Process

Plug in the charging gun → PP connection confirmation → PE grounding → CP handshake communication → DC +/- power supply (TC synchronous temperature measurement) → Full charge or abnormality → CP power-off control
