How Does a Three-Phase Separator Work?
In oil & gas and process applications, a three-phase separator is designed to separate an incoming mixed stream into three distinct phases:

Gas | Oil | Water
The separation process may look simple, but stable operation depends on the correct combination of vessel design, internals, retention time, level control and pressure protection.
Inside the separator:
🔹 1. Inlet Momentum Reduction
The inlet baffle reduces the momentum of the incoming gas-oil-water mixture and helps distribute the flow inside the vessel.
🔹 2. Gravity Separation
As the flow velocity decreases, the phases begin to separate according to density:
- Gas rises to the upper v***r space
- Oil forms the middle liquid layer
- Water settles at the bottom
🔹 3. Mist Removal
Before leaving through the gas outlet, the gas passes through a mist extractor / demister pad, which helps remove entrained liquid droplets and reduce liquid carryover.
🔹 4. Oil-Water Interface Control
Proper liquid level and interface control are essential for maintaining stable oil and water layers and preventing phase carryover.
🔹 5. Weir & Oil Chamber
The weir helps maintain the oil level and allows separated oil to overflow into the dedicated oil chamber before discharge.
🔹 6. Independent Outlets
Separated gas, oil and water leave the vessel through dedicated outlets for downstream processing, storage or treatment.
