A pigment can look perfect in the lab - and still not be ready for production.

Before a product is released, the laboratory looks at much more than colour.

Why Is White Plastic Harder to Color Than Red?

At first glance, white seems like the easiest color to produce.

White can require much tighter control than bright red, blue, or green.

How Film Thickness Changes Color Perception

The short answer: the thickness of a colored film affects how we perceive its color because it changes how much light travels through the material. The thicker the layer, the deeper, darker, and more saturated the color appears.

🔹Think of the ocean

Near the shore, the water looks almost transparent. A little farther out, it turns turquoise. In deeper water, it appears dark blue.
The water itself hasn't changed - only the depth that light travels through.

The same principle applies to paints, printing inks, and transparent colored plastics.

🔹Why does this happen?

As light passes through a colored material, part of it is absorbed by the pigment.
The thicker the film, the longer the light travels inside the material, and the more light is absorbed. As a result, the color appears richer and more intense. This behavior is described by the Beer-Lambert law.

In addition, some pigments may show a slight shade shift as film thickness changes. This is why two coatings made from the same formulation can still appear different if they are applied unevenly.

Film thickness influences the final appearance in many pigment applications:
