During the Lesser Fullness of Grain period, the summer harvest is about to begin. A saying about rain during this time mentions, "A heavy rainfall makes the river full."
Because of the great increase in rainfall, rivers are full of water, which makes fish and shrimp big and fat. This is a good time to eat fish and shrimp. It is also harvest season for fishermen.
High temperatures and humidity are common during this period. This time is a good period of the quick growth of flowers. It is also a season when plant diseases and pests are at an all-time high, which makes growing flowers even more critical.
In this season, silkworms have cocooned. People begin to cook cocoons and prepare the spinning wheel for reeling silk. Those who engage in the silk industry thank the deity by offering sacrifices and staging performances. They pray to the deity for blessings and a boom season for the silk business.

According to historical records, during the Zhou Dynasty(1099-1050 BC), the emperor led all the civil and military officials to the southern outskirts of country’s capital city to welcome the summer by holding a sacrificial ceremony of offerings to the Yan Emperor (c. 25th century BC)and Zhu Rong (the fire god) on the day of Beginning of Summer. In ancient times, the color of the ceremonial dress and the jade pendant worn by this ceremony and even the carriages and horses which they rode and the flags on their carriages were all red. It signified the fiery summer that was about to arrive.
Traditional Chinese medicine believes that people shall keep pace with changes in the weather and pay attention to the hearts’ health at the transition of spring and summer. With the beginning of summer, the weather turns hot, and traditional Chinese medicine also believes that “summer-heat tends to injure the vitality” and “summer-heat is likely to impatient the heart.” Thus, people should nurse their bodies and build up the hearts’ health during this season. Especially the elderly need to consciously take good care of their emotion, keep calm and happy, and avoid extreme excitement or sorrow which might hurt the health.
During the early summer, the elderly are easy to get obstruction of blood circulation. It is recommended to eat onions and drink a small amount of alcohol in the morning to promote blood and heart vessel circulation so as to prevent the occurrence of heart disease. After Beginning of Summer, when the weather gradually turns hot, it is better to eat a light diet with digestible and vitamin-rich food rather than a high-fat and spicy diet.

Qingming Festival, or the Tomb-Sweeping Day is one of the Chinese Twenty-four Solar Terms. It is on April 4th or 5th of the Gregorian calendar. It is the crucial time for plowing and sowing in the spring. From that date, the temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases.
Cleaning the tombs and paying respect to the dead with offerings are the two important practices to remember late relatives. Weeds around the tomb are cleared away and fresh soil is added to show care for the dead. The dead person's favorite food, wine and chopsticks are offered on their tombs, along with paper money.
Not only is it a day for commemorating the dead, but it is also a time for people to enjoy themselves. Spring outings not only add joy to life but also promote a healthy mind and body.
