Applications of CMC and PAC
1. CMC Applications
Carboxymethyl Cellulose CMC is a general-purpose cellulose derivative widely used across multiple industries:
Paper Industry
Surface sizing agent
Strength enhancer
Coating additive
Improves paper smoothness and strength
Food Industry (Food-grade CMC)
Thickener
Stabilizer
Suspensing agent
Examples:
Ice cream
Beverages
Sauces
Personal Care & Detergents
Thickener in detergents
Binder in toothpaste
Stabilizer in shampoos
Oil & Gas Drilling
Fluid loss reducer
Viscosity modifier
Wellbore stabilizer
Ceramics & Construction
Ceramic binder
Putty and wall filler thickener
Water retention agent in cement-based products
2. PAC Applications
Polyanionic Cellulose PAC is a high-performance modified cellulose mainly designed for oilfield environments.
Oil & Gas Drilling (Main Application)
Controls API and HTHP fluid loss
Improves drilling fluid rheology
Excellent salt and calcium resistance
Wellbore stabilization
Grades:
PAC LV (Low Viscosity)
PAC HV (High Viscosity)
Water-Based Drilling Fluids
Freshwater mud systems
Seawater mud systems
Brine-based mud systems
PAC performs better than CMC under high salinity conditions
Completion & Fracturing Fluids
Viscosity control
Proppant transport
Fluid loss control
Limited Industrial Use
High-end paper applications
Some ceramic formulations
CMC is a general-purpose cellulose thickener used across many industries, while PAC is a high-performance oilfield-grade cellulose designed for harsh drilling environments (high salinity, high temperature, and fluid loss control).

A superplasticizer (also called a high-range water reducer) is a chemical admixture added to concrete or cement mixtures to dramatically improve workability without increasing the water content.
What it does
Increases flowability → makes concrete easier to pour and place
Reduces water demand → you can use less water while maintaining the same consistency
Improves strength & durability → lower water–cement ratio leads to stronger concrete
Enhances surface finish → smoother, more uniform results
How it works
Superplasticizers disperse cement particles by electrostatic repulsion or steric hindrance, preventing them from clumping. This frees up trapped water in the mix, making it more fluid.
Common types
Sulfonated naphthalene formaldehyde (SNF)
Older type, widely used
Good water reduction, moderate slump retention
Sulfonated melamine formaldehyde (SMF)
Faster strength gain
Often used in precast concrete
Polycarboxylate ether (PCE)
Modern, high-performance
Excellent flow and long slump retention
Most common in advanced construction today
Typical applications
High-strength concrete (skyscrapers, bridges)
Self-compacting concrete (SCC)
Precast elements
Pumped concrete (long-distance delivery)
Simple example
Without superplasticizer:
More water → easier flow but weaker concrete
With superplasticizer:
Less water + same flow → stronger, more durable concrete
