Understanding Plate Heat Exchanger Materials & Their Applications
Choosing the right material for plate heat exchangers is crucial for ensuring efficiency and durability in various industrial applications. Here’s a breakdown of commonly used stainless steel grades and their key properties:
🔹 304 & 304L Stainless Steel
Ideal for organic and inorganic media. 304L has lower carbon content, making it more weldable and suitable for welded heat exchangers.
🔹 316 & 316L Stainless Steel
Higher molybdenum (Mo) content than 304, providing better resistance to chloride corrosion. 316L is commonly chosen due to minimal price difference from 316. Used for cooling water, dilute acids, and solvents but not recommended for sulfuric acid.
🔹 317 Stainless Steel
Enhanced corrosion resistance compared to 316L, making it suitable for more demanding conditions.
🔹 AISI 904L & SUS 890L
Cost-effective options with superior resistance, especially against sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and halides.
🔹 SMO 254
A super stainless steel with high molybdenum content, offering excellent resistance to chloride and crevice corrosion—ideal for saline and inorganic acid applications.
🔹 SMO 654
An even more advanced material than SMO 254, suitable for cold seawater environments.
🔹 RS2 Stainless Steel (0Cr20Ni26Mo3Cu3Si2Nb)
Comparable to 316 in China but with superior stress corrosion resistance. Can withstand high-concentration sulfuric acid at temperatures above 80°C.
Selecting the right material ensures optimal performance and longevity in diverse operating conditions. Which material do you commonly use in your industry? Let’s discuss!
