Rule of thumb:

We dropped a supplier we'd used for 5 years. It wasn't about price.

On paper, they were perfect: on-time delivery, competitive quote, friendly sales rep.

Then our refinish team started flagging the same thing over and over β€”

"these P3000 sheets don't finish the same as the last batch."

So we ran a simple test. Same panel. Same operator. Same technique. Three suppliers, three sheets, blind.

The results that made the decision for us:

β†’ Finishing consistency varied more within one box than between brands.

β†’ Two of three shed abrasive after 15 minutes submerged.

β†’ The one that performed best was not the cheapest per sheet β€” but it was 30% cheaper per vehicle repaired.

What I took from it:

β€’ Loyalty isn't a sourcing strategy. Testing is.

β€’ "Meets spec" and "performs consistently" are two very different claims.

β€’ Your operators already know which brand works. Ask them before you ask the supplier.
