IEC Students Excel at 5th International Mathematical OlympiadOn March 15, 2025, IEC students showcased their exceptional mathematical abilities at the 5th International Mathematical Olympiad, which was co-organized by SAU and Amur State University of Russia. The online competition, included in the list of the Mathematical Olympiad of Higher Education of Russia, attracted 135 participants from China, Russia, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe and other countries. According to the event’s organizing committee, these participants were from 13 universities around the world. Consul-General Jiang Xiaoyang of Khabarovsk, Russia, attended and delivered a speech at the online opening ceremony. Prof. Wang Li, Deputy Dean from the College of Science, attended the off-line competition.
This year, SAU sent a contingent of 26 students, with 12 Chinese students and 14 international students, to represent the university. They joined their carefully selected international peers. The event brought together top minds globally and maintained its status as one of the most prestigious math competitions.
The Olympiad featured comprehensive problems covering mathematical analysis, algebra, geometry, calculus equations, and probability theory. These staple International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) topics required participants to have a deep understanding and creative problem-solving skills.
From March 4th to 13th, in preparation for this academic challenge, IEC students received intense training under the guidance of Mr. Meng Chao, a faculty advisor from the College of Science. Under his guidance, students delved into topics like algebra, number theory, and geometry, and were encouraged to engage in teamwork and critical thinking, thus gaining confidence to handle complex problems. This created a collaborative atmosphere where students shared ideas, discussed strategies, and learned from each other.
After the intense competition, the grand award ceremony was held on April 16. Prof. Qi Han, Deputy Dean of IEC, and Prof. Wang Li, Deputy Dean from the College of Science, presented awards to the winning students, acknowledging their outstanding performance and hard work. Deputy Dean Qi Han delivered a heartfelt speech, emphasizing the significance of such competitions in building confidence, fostering creativity, and enhancing intercultural understanding.
Besides, the students who participated in the Intercultural Competence Competition attended the ceremony to celebrate the pursuit of excellence and cross-cultural interaction. Selected high-achieving students shared their experiences, challenges, and motivation in speeches, inspiring their peers and highlighting the importance of collaboration and determination. This event not only celebrated individual talent but also strengthened the bonds among SAU students from diverse backgrounds.
The competition served not only as a skills test but also as a celebration of international academic cooperation and excellence. IEC students’ participation demonstrated the university's commitment to global education and cross-cultural collaboration.
The experience for all participants was invaluable, highlighting mathematics' power to unite students from different backgrounds in the pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence.
