When should you request a custom display review?

Not every project needs one on day one. But it's worth starting an early conversation when:

• You have an enclosure drawing or a fixed cutout to fit
• The interface or touch technology is still undecided
• Volume and product lifecycle matter (display parts do go end-of-life)
• You're integrating a display, touch panel, controller board and main PCBA together

Getting these reviewed before tooling prevents the costly re-spin later.

The inputs most display RFQs are missing.

When a display quote stalls, it's usually not the price — it's missing information. The most common gaps we see:

• Operating environment (indoor / outdoor / temperature range)
• The host interface the board supports
• Touch type and whether gloves or styluses are used
• Cover-glass dimensions, printing and surface finish (1/2)
• Target quantity and project stage

A bare panel often isn't a complete solution either — depending on your host platform, you may need a controller board to convert the interface and drive the backlight.

Specifying a custom TFT LCD looks simple — until the quote request comes back with twelve questions you hadn't prepared for.

Before you ask a supplier for a price, it helps to confirm a few things:

• Screen size AND the mechanical envelope (two 10.1" panels can have different outlines and connectors)
• Resolution matched to viewing distance, not just "the higher the better"
• Brightness for the actual lighting — 250–500 nits indoors vs 1000+ for sunlight
• The interface your host board actually supports (SPI, RGB, LVDS, MIPI)
• Touch technology driven by the environment (gloves? water? multi-touch?)

You won't always have every answer at the start — that's normal. Sharing what you have, and flagging what's still open, gets you a realistic quote instead of a placeholder.
