🚨 BREAKING: Zimbabwe Lithium Export Ban Triggers Sharp Surge in Lithium Carbonate Futures
Important update for the global new energy and lithium industry: Zimbabwe, one of the world’s top four lithium-producing countries, has announced an immediate suspension of all lithium ore and lithium concentrate exports, including in-transit shipments.
Under the new regulation, only enterprises holding valid mining rights and approved concentrator facilities are eligible to export lithium products. Agents and third-party traders are strictly prohibited from engaging in lithium export activities, marking an unprecedented level of regulatory control.

Why this matters for China (and the world):

- Zimbabwe is China’s second-largest lithium concentrate import source, accounting for 19% of China’s total lithium concentrate imports.

- In 2025, China imported 1.2 million tons of lithium ore from Zimbabwe, a critical source supporting the country’s battery and new energy industry supply chain.

- Market impact: Lithium carbonate futures soared to 173,000 yuan per ton, with a single-day increase of 11,250 yuan, approaching the daily trading limit.

This export ban has raised concerns about potential supply tightness in the global lithium market, particularly as battery manufacturers resume production post-Spring Festival and demand for energy storage continues to grow.

A positive development: Major Chinese lithium enterprises with established operations in Zimbabwe, such as Yahua Group, are actively engaging with the local government. Some of these enterprises expect to resume eligible exports within 1-2 weeks, which will help minimize disruptions to their operational stability.
