I was browsing LinkedIn recently and saw a steel importer complaining about their last shipment of square pipes. The standard, size, and heat number on the physical pipes were completely blurry or missing, making it a total nightmare for their port customs clearance and quality inspection.

Honestly, it’s frustrating. A heat number/batch number isn’t just a random string of text—it’s the "ID card" of the steel. When things go wrong on the project site, traceability is the only line of defense.

🔹 The "QU" Series (GB Standard): Widely used for heavy-duty gantry and overhead crane tracks. For instance, QU70 means the rail head width is approximately 70mm.

🔹 Wear & Tolerance Check: Standard calipers are used to verify the precise symmetry of the rail head. Even a 1mm deviation can affect the smooth running of crane wheels and accelerate wear.

Many express great disappointment when a batch of galvanized pipes arrives with standard mill certs, but the actual cargo inside the container is plagued with heavy white rust, or the bottom rows are dented due to improper vertical weight distribution. 🛑📦

The hard truth? Excellent galvanizing at the mill can be completely ruined by poor logistics engineering during a rough 40-day ocean transit.

They ordered a batch of structural steel, but when the trucks arrived, the quantity was short, and several profiles were slightly warped. The worst part? The supplier is totally ghosting them on a real solution, just replying with "we are checking." 🤦‍♂️

【Industry Insight: The Unspoken Pain of Steel Strip Procurement】

We often hear steel importers on LinkedIn venting about the same recurring issues: Rusting under the wrap, telescoped coils, and deformed edges that jam their slitting machines.

The truth is, buying high-quality steel is only 50% of the job. The remaining 50% relies entirely on how that steel is prepared for the journey. 📦🚛

If you are importing steel strips or slit coils, here are the real knowledge points behind proper export packaging that you should look out for:

1️⃣ Anti-Telescoping Strapping: Narrow strips have a high tendency to shift sideways (telescope). Multiple high-tensile steel bands bound tightly through the eye are non-negotiable to lock the layers together.
2️⃣ Radial & Circumferential Protection: The blue PVC wrapping shown in the workshop pictures today isn't for aesthetics. It ensures that even if water penetrates the outer container, the steel itself remains completely bone-dry.
3️⃣ Pre-Loading Verification: Damage often happens before the ship departs. Securing the coils properly on the domestic flatbed or container chassis using heavy-duty chocks and tension straps is what prevents early structural damage.
