Four Practical Decarbonization Pathways for the Cement Industry
For cement producers, decarbonization is no longer only an environmental objective. With overcapacity, contracting demand, rising operating pressure, and increasingly stringent emissions requirements, companies must also assess whether a technical route can deliver practical operational and economic value.
Four pathways currently offer relatively strong implementation potential:
Alternative fuels are comparatively easy to adopt, but their deep-decarbonization potential depends on stable fuel availability and achievable substitution rates.
Calcareous raw material substitution, using materials such as carbide slag and steel slag, can reduce emissions from calcium carbonate decomposition, although resource distribution, transportation, and environmental standards remain important constraints.
Co-production of cement and sulfuric acid from industrial waste gypsum may create both waste-utilization and revenue opportunities, but it requires strong process control, stable operation, and reliable product quality.
Steel slag phase-separation clinker technology can combine solid-waste utilization, lower energy consumption, and improved clinker performance, although its full value depends on mastering the core process.
There is no single solution suitable for every cement plant. The right pathway should be selected according to production scale, technical capability, resource availability, logistics, environmental standards, and market conditions.
