💧 reminds us that real change starts with us.

This year’s message, Our Power, Our Planet, is a call to action, not just to protect nature, but to take responsibility for the world we shape every day. From the air we breathe to the water we drink, our choices leave a lasting impact.

Around the globe, this day brings people together through education, community events, and environmental actions that push for cleaner energy, safer water, and stronger protection of natural resources. It is a reminder that progress depends on collective effort and local action.

Plastic pollution remains part of that story. It does not disappear, it breaks down into microplastics that are increasingly present in drinking water. What we throw away today can return to us tomorrow, in the most essential resource we have.

But change is already happening. Communities, cities, and individuals are stepping up, reducing waste, protecting water sources, and driving sustainable solutions forward.

Earth Day is not just about awareness. It is about action:
-Reduce single use plastics
-Support clean water initiatives
-Take part in community activities and environmental events
-Hold companies and leaders accountable

Our choices matter. Our voice matters.
And together, we have the power to protect our planet. 🌍 ✨

💧2nd national workshop for Croatian stakeholders of project MicroDrink

The 2nd National Stakeholder Workshop of the MicroDrink project in Croatia was successfully held on 12 March 2026 in Zagreb, bringing together a diverse and highly engaged group of experts and water practitioners.

The workshop was organised by the Institute of Public Health Zadar, with the support of the Croatian Geological Survey (Lead Partner), and gathered 30+ participants representing national, regional and local public authorities, water utilities, research institutions and academia.

Throughout the event, participants actively contributed to discussions on microplastics in drinking water, shared valuable insights from their respective fields, and had the opportunity to test and give feedback on the beta version of the Decision-making support tool currently in development by the project.

The level of engagement and openness to collaboration clearly demonstrated the strong interest and relevance of this topic across sectors.

We are pleased to see such a high level of participation, constructive exchange, and professional dialogue, all of which contribute to strengthening the foundation for future cooperation and knowledge transfer. 🌍 ✨

💧On March 26, the final workshop of the MicroDrink project took place at the Brno branch of the T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute.

Nearly 30 participants from academia and the research sector, representatives of private companies and public authorities, as well as stakeholders, were introduced to the results of monitoring microplastic occurrence in drinking water from the source to the end consumer, along with other practical project outputs—particularly the project’s knowledge base and the decision support tool.

A lively discussion between the research team members and participants focused mainly on uncertainties related to microplastics monitoring in the environment and the relevant legislation. 🌍✨

💧World Water Day – 22 March

Observed every year since 1993, World Water Day is a United Nations initiative dedicated to highlighting the importance of fresh water and the need to protect this vital resource.

Beyond celebration, the day is also a reminder of a serious global challenge: around 2.1 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water. World Water Day encourages action to address the global water crisis and supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 – ensuring water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Each year, UN-Water sets a central theme for the observance. The theme for 2026 is “Water and Gender.”

Despite progress in many areas, women and girls in numerous communities still carry a disproportionate share of responsibilities related to water and sanitation, while remaining underrepresented in decision-making and leadership in water management.

Water is essential for life, equality, and sustainable development. 🌎✨

💧 🍽️ How Does Microplastic Affect Our Environment? – KinderUni at FAU

As part of KinderUni, the AGMES Research Group welcomed young explorers to discover how microplastics affect our environment.

Gabriele Chiogna, Dr. Mohammad Alqadi د.محمد القاضي, and Anushruti Kukreja introduced children to how plastics break down into microplastics, how they spread through ecosystems, and why this matters for animals, plants, and water resources.

Through interactive discussions and hands-on activities, including creating their own “plastic meal”, participants learned how easily plastic can blend into everyday life and why responsible use is so important.

At AGMES, we believe research goes beyond the lab. Engaging with the next generation is an essential part of building awareness and shaping sustainable futures. 🌍✨
