The MicroDrink Board will continue its collaboration through follow-up activities, building on the strong partnerships, scientific expertise, and shared commitment established over the past two and a half years.

Together, they will continue advancing research on microplastics, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and promoting sustainable drinking water management across the Danube Region. 🌍 ✨

The Danube is far more than a river. It is a vital source of drinking water, biodiversity, economic development, and cultural identity for millions of people across Europe.

Today, this shared natural treasure faces a growing and often invisible challenge – microplastic pollution. Tiny plastic particles are increasingly finding their way into rivers, ecosystems, and drinking water sources, posing risks to both environmental and human health. Protecting the Danube means protecting one of our most valuable resources: clean water.

Through the project, we are working to better understand, monitor, and reduce microplastic contamination in drinking water systems across the Danube Region, helping to safeguard water quality for present and future generations.

This Danube Day, let us remember:

-Every drop matters.
-Clean drinking water is a fundamental right.
-Protecting the Danube means protecting our future.

💧Transnational Monitoring Database of Microplastics in Drinking Water

The MicroDrink project carried out a year-long pilot sampling campaign at nine sites, covering three major aquifer types: karst, intergranular, and surface water/bank filtration.

Using a harmonized methodology aligned with the EU Drinking Water Directive (2020/2184) and its 2024 Delegated Act on microplastic measurement, the project achieved the first transnational implementation of standardized sampling procedures, improving data comparability and supporting policy integration across participating countries.

To address the lack of accessible monitoring data, MicroDrink developed an open Transnational Monitoring Database, providing free access to quarterly monitoring results from all pilot sites and strengthening cross-border cooperation. 🌍✨

💧FAU had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Daniel Bittner from Erftverband to discuss ongoing activities and collaboration.

During the meeting, the FAU team presented the laboratory results from the Germany MicroDrink project and demonstrated the Knowledge Hub, showcasing its capabilities for data management, knowledge sharing, and collaboration.

The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and receive valuable feedback on the presented results and the Knowledge Hub. We appreciate the constructive discussion and look forward to future collaboration. 🌍✨

💧MicroDrink at InPlasTwin Summer School 2026

From 15-19 June 2026, the MicroDrink project participated in the InPlasTwin Summer School 2026 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, bringing together experts working on micro- and nanoplastics in environmental and food systems.

Representing the Croatian Geological Survey, Lead Partner of the project, Dr. sc. Ana Selak joined discussions on advanced detection methods, environmental impacts, and policy development. During the Science-Policy-Practice Lab, she presented MicroDrink’s Roadmap Towards MP Strategy, highlighting the project’s contribution to evidence-based solutions for microplastic contamination in drinking water.

Participation in the Summer School provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, strengthen international cooperation, and increase the visibility of the MicroDrink project within the European scientific and policy community working to tackle microplastic pollution. 🌍✨

💧On June 12, as part of the SUNDANSE project activities, researchers had the opportunity to visit the REXDAN research vessel while it was anchored in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Among the visitors was Dr. Branislav Petrović, Assistant Professor at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Mining and Geology and a member of the MicroDrink project.

During the visit, participants explored the vessel’s state-of-the-art laboratories and learned about its advanced capabilities for environmental monitoring, water sampling, and hydromorphological research along the Danube River.

REXDAN is the largest and most advanced integrated freshwater research vessel in Europe, operated by the “Dunărea de Jos” University of Galați, Romania. The vessel supports complex scientific investigations across a navigable 2,000 km stretch of the Danube, contributing to a better understanding and protection of freshwater ecosystems.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange and strengthened collaboration among researchers working towards sustainable river management and environmental protection.🌍✨

Every year on June 5, the world marks World Environment Day, a global reminder that the future of our planet depends on the choices we make today.

The planet is speaking louder than ever.

Rising seas. Extreme heat. Wildfires. Melting glaciers.
These are not distant warnings anymore. These are signals we are already living through.

For years, the world talked about climate change as a problem of the future.
But the future has arrived.

And while the climate crisis accelerates, another invisible threat continues to spread through our rivers, oceans, soil, and even our bodies. Microplastics.

Tiny plastic particles are now found in drinking water, marine ecosystems, food chains, and the air we breathe. What was once considered convenience has become one of the defining environmental challenges of our generation.

Yet there is still another signal rising beneath the noise.

💧 MicroDrink held 5th Partner Meeting in Belgrade, Serbia

 The 5th Partner Meeting of the MicroDrink project was successfully held in Belgrade, Serbia, hosted by PP9 – University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mining and Geology, with support from the Lead Partner – the Croatian Geological Survey.

 The meeting brought together project partners to discuss progress, results, and future activities related to microplastics in drinking water resources across the Danube Region.

 During the meeting, partners presented results from national sampling campaigns, discussed harmonised methodologies and capacity-building activities, and worked on strengthening cooperation and future strategies for addressing microplastic pollution.

 The programme also included a field trip to the Pavliš groundwater source near Vršac, providing valuable insights into groundwater management and drinking water supply practices, as well as a great opportunity for networking and exchange of ideas among partners.

 The meeting concluded with Steering Committee and communication sessions focused on project management, dissemination activities, and future outreach plan. 🌎 ✨
