The German Aerospace Center, DLR, is Germany's national research center for aeronautics and space, transport and energy. The main portal of DLR is https://www.facebook.com/DLRde

The STERN program was initiated by DLR Space Administration in Bonn and offers aerospace engineering students a practical introduction to space transport. During the project duration of three years the soon-to-be engineer

s will develop their own rockets. There are no limits regarding peak altitude or the propulsion system used (solid fuel, liquid fuel, steam or hybrid). As in any development program, students have to pass several reviews in which they have to present and defend their rocket design in front of experts. DLR Mobile Rocket Base (MORABA) and DLR-Space Propulsion Institute as well as DLR Space Administration accompany the students during the reviews until launch. MORABA has decades of experience in launching sounding rockets and the Space Propulsion Institute in testing rocket engines. Currently eight German universities are participating in the STERN-program.

Within the STERN II Leonis II project a sounding rocket was developed, manufactured and in the common days will be launched at ESRANGE, Sweden. The designed rocket “Schwerdtlein” has an electronic system which ensures that all components are supplied with power and also to record the data and send it to the ground stations. Two commercial altimeters are used for this, an Altimax and two TeleMega. Today, the team tested the system.
