Over 800 astronomy enthusiasts gathered at Observatório Astronómico de Travancinha in Portugal for the total solar eclipse and a night of stargazing, with the Perseid meteor shower lighting up the night sky. What an amazing day for space fans!

🌕 Sturgeon Moon

The Full Moon of August is coming soon!
Derived from Native American and Algonquin tribes, this Full Moon is named after the sturgeon, a freshwater fish that is caught around this time of year in North America!

A full Moon happens roughly every 29.5 days, when Earth is directly between the Sun and the Moon. This alignment makes the face of the Moon completely lit by the Sun from our view point on Earth.

This full Moon also happens to be a partial lunar eclipse! The Moon will appear to be red in the night sky, which is why a lunar eclipse is called a Blood Moon. ❤️
