Does an air conditioner also heat? It can be one of the most efficient ways to do it.
Air conditioning is often associated with summer only. However, many units also operate in heating mode, providing comfort all year round with a single system.
In heating mode, the cycle is reversed: the unit captures heat from the outdoor air, even when it is cold outside, and transfers it into the home.
This is precisely what makes it so efficient. While an electric heater converts around 1 kWh of electricity into 1 kWh of heat, an air conditioner with a SCOP of 4 delivers, on average, around 4 kWh of heat for every kWh consumed. SCOP varies from model to model, so it should always be checked on the unit’s technical datasheet.
Performance does, however, depend on several factors: outdoor temperature, home insulation, correct sizing of the unit and regular maintenance.
To make the most of heating mode, it is advisable to direct the airflow downwards, keep doors and windows closed, and schedule operation using Wi-Fi control.
