Across the world, different locations have had to adopt their own unique approaches to recycling and sustainability.

In Vietnam for instance, between 2.9 – 3.3 million tonnes of plastic waste is generated every year with only a meagre 27 – 33% getting recycled. Whilst there are various formal programmes to collect and process this waste, Vietnam is very much dependent on a network of informal waste workers, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, to collect recyclable waste including plastic bottles and other forms of packaging, as well as aluminium cans which are sorted and then sent to recycling centres.

In 2025, BASF Starting Ventures along with our partners introduced a programme called ‘Accompanying Eco-Guardians: Driving a Sustainable Recycling Community’ that started off with a workshop to provide these informal waste workers with practical knowledge on environmental protection, occupational health and safety and financial awareness, as well as bicycles and personal safety equipment. Continuing this momentum, the program this year saw not just the workshop and support provided to a new batch of informal waste workers, but also the selection of two participants from the previous year’s group to receive tailored assistance from BASF Starting Ventures to upgrade their operations with improved facilities, upgraded tools and equipment for an enhanced business model: micro-entrepreneurship!

Effective waste collection and sorting has always been one of the largest challenges and a bottleneck to Vietnam’s green waste management efforts and BASF hopes that by this grassroots-level engagement, we’re able to implement a sustainable development and a circular economy in Vietnam for a greener tomorrow!

What does sparkling water have to do with this chemical plant? Let’s find out!

In our CO₂-factory at the Ludwigshafen site, CO₂ from the ammonia plant is purified, liquefied, and made available for numerous applications.

The CO₂ is used within the BASF-Verbund, but it’s also sold directly to customers: as carbon dioxide for sparkling water, soft drinks, and b**r, or as an industrial gas for a wide variety of applications.

By the way: CO₂ is a pretty cool product - literally! In the CO₂ plant, it’s liquefied at –25 degrees Celsius.

A pilot with BASF, BEST Bioenergy, ETH Zurich and an automaker used gasification to turn automotive shredder residue and biomass into circular feedstock, which BASF then used to produce new steering wheels.

This helps reduce CO₂ emissions while keeping carbon in the loop, another step forward for sustainability in the automotive industry.

From above, our colleagues form the number 15. Every day, they help shape what that number represents.

This year marks 15 years since our site in Jacareí, Brazil, was inaugurated under the BASF name. Today, around 360 colleagues work there, producing ingredients and solutions for personal care, cleaning, agriculture and mining customers in Brazil and across South America.
Over the years, the team has advanced responsible sourcing, energy management and biodiversity conservation alongside its work for customers. As we celebrate this milestone, we thank everyone who has helped build the Jacareí story and continues to move it forward.

Today, we're heading into the prilling tower at our urea plant in Ludwigshafen. This is where urea prills are produced: tiny granules with a big impact.
Urea is an important chemical building block used worldwide in a wide range of applications, including fertilizers, AdBlue®, resins, adhesives, and cosmetics
By the way, urea production has a long history at BASF. Urea has been produced at our Ludwigshafen site for more than 100 years.
