U13 Rockies Cup Overall Winner 2026. 🏆
We’re damn proud to be one of the brands supporting Mika and watching him get faster race by race.
Racing at this age is a team effort. His family makes the countless weekends, travelling, wrenching and everything around racing possible. And there are a bunch of sponsors and supporters helping along the way too.
But in the end, Mika is the one who has to get on the bike and deliver.
And he’s damn fast. 💜🏁
Big congrats Mika — and thanks to everyone helping him do what he loves.

We keep getting asked if we can build custom geometry VHP X frames.

Technically: yes.

But even relatively small geometry changes get expensive quickly.

For example, changing the front triangle to get a specific reach or headtube length could look something like this:

6 hours engineering / CAD → ~€600
One-off CNC lug set → ~€1,000
Jig modifications → ~€250
Extra setup, tube preparation & QC → ~€150

So we're already at roughly €2,000 additional cost.

And that's with some pretty clear limitations.

We wouldn't design an entirely new bike. The rear triangle, kinematics, rocker, pivots, tube diameters and basic VHP X construction would stay the same.

We're talking about changing selected parameters of the front triangle within limits that we know we can manufacture and are comfortable putting our name on.

The nice thing about the way the VHP X is built is that this is actually possible without developing an entirely new frame.

The slightly dangerous thing is that some of you might actually want one.

Human-made leaves traces.

Today we got an update from our carbon tube supplier.

There are fingerprints on some of our tubes.

Not on the surface. In the laminate.

Normally this would be an easy QC decision: cosmetic defect → reject.

But it started a discussion.

Someone actually made these tubes. The material was handled during the manufacturing process and somewhere along the way, a fingerprint became permanently embedded in the carbon.

Technically, there’s nothing wrong with the tube.
Structurally, it meets our requirements.
It just isn’t visually perfect.

And that made us question what “perfect” should actually mean for a Kavenz.

We build every frame by hand in Münster. Our tubes are made by people. Our parts are machined, finished, bonded and assembled by people.

Handmade can never be an excuse for poor quality. Safety, function and durability are non-negotiable.

But a harmless visual trace of the person who made the part?

In an increasingly automated world, maybe that isn’t something we need to hide.

Maybe the fingerprint isn’t a defect.

Maybe it’s a signature.

Does 300 g actually matter?

We’ve had a few discussions lately about the VHP X being around 300 g heavier than the V7.

It reminded me of a project our intern Phillip did a few years ago. We were looking into whether a KAVENZ downcountry bike should use a high pivot, and the obvious question was:

How much efficiency do we actually lose through the idler?

So instead of guessing, Phillip calculated it and compared his model with drivetrain test-bench data.

At 25 km/h on flat ground, the model looked like this:

126 W aerodynamic drag
48 W rolling resistance
4.5 W drivetrain losses
~2 W idler loss

Total rider power: around 181 W.

The idler was roughly 1% of the picture.

He also compared different idler sizes. Bigger is more efficient, and his conclusion at the time was that 18T or larger made sense to stay below a 1.5% loss target.

Interestingly, today we use a 16T idler on the VHP X.

Why? Because efficiency isn't the only parameter. Packaging, suspension layout, chain management, weight, clearance and durability all have to work together. The small additional theoretical loss was a compromise we were happy to make.

And that's pretty much how we look at those extra 300 g as well.

For an 80 kg rider on a ~16 kg bike, 300 g changes the total system weight by about 0.3%.

On flat ground at constant speed, it makes essentially no difference.

Even on a 10% climb at 10 km/h, those 300 g require only about 0.8 W extra.

You can measure it.

But can you feel it?

We'd rather put those 300 g into a frame that does what we want it to do than chase a number because it looks better on a spec sheet.

Not everything measurable is noticeable.

Some thoughts from the bonding room, with the VHP X we won internationally but lost in Germany. While Giacomo is bonding he came up with one thought. The famous Millenial Game Quartett Destroyed our brains and we are still buying products like that.

One of the most fun parts here at Kavenz is that we have a great team and we can do so many things in house.
