And finally.. Algiers! 🇩🇿

The capital of Algeria was a very pleasant surprise. For some reason I wasn't expecting an exciting day, but in between walking across the botanical garden, exploring the Casbah and trying a bunch of local food 🍲 with our lovely guide Nour, we had a truly awesome day, even if after only 2 hours of sleep. 😴

We tried mhajeb (spicy Algerian stuffed bread filled with a mixture of onions, green pepper, tomatoes and harissa) and karantika (chickpea sandwich) for lunch
Dinner was a mix of traditional dishes.

Algeria is truly a gem of a destination.
I have no doubt that i'll be back! 🇩🇿✈️

Thank you Wassim Med for the impeccable organisation, and figuring out some complicated logistics!

Hello from the Tassili n'Ajjer National Park. 🇩🇿
The area is inhabited by the Kel Ajjer Tuareg people and is famous for thousands of Neolithic engravings and paintings as well as dramatic desert landscapes and towering dunes and deep canyons. 🏞️

We first went to the Djanet market before heading off to the vast openness of the desert. 🏜️
We then spent the next two days travelling around the desert stopping to see rock paintings and taking in the scenery, exploring canyons, having delicious lunches and dinners, cooked by our local guide and driver over an open fire 🔥

We had no connectivity, camped under the starry skies and detoxed a little until it was time to go back to Djanet and take our next flight to Algiers! ⛺

We baked tegrilla bread under the hot sand, and our guide prepared some amazing vegetable and couscous dishes. All washed down with tea and lots of amazing dates of course! 🌴

A 10-hour layover in Algiers 🇩🇿, and we went on an 'off the beaten track' tour of Algiers where we visited sailing ports and a fort, as well as places related to Albert Camus ✍🏻and Miguel de Cervantes.

We had an early dinner of Doubara (chickpea and bean stew) and Zfiti (grilled peppers, tomatoes, garlic, and coriander mashed together with a hot, thin, and hard semolina flatbread), before heading back to the airport for our next flight. 🍲

The most exciting part of our trip is about to start! 🏜️

Djemila certainly lives up to it's name!
The UNESCO world heritage site houses Roman fora, temples, basilicas and triumphal arches in a gorgeous mountain location. 📜🏛️

After that we headed to Constantine, the City of Bridges, and what a beautiful city!
Founded by the Phoenicians, it has been inhabited for three millennia, serving as a hub for Numidian, Roman, Ottoman, and French colonial powers.🌉🌉

The Old Town is a labyrinth of narrow, winding alleys and high, historic buildings, which highlight the city's character beautifully.

Dinner was the traditional Constantine dish of trida. Trida is a made with handcrafted square-shaped pasta, chickpeas, and hard-boiled eggs served with a white sauce or red sauce. I chose to have veal with mine too.

Ghardaia is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed cluster of seven fortified towns (ksour) in the M'zab Valley, founded in the 11th century. 🏰

It has retained its own traditions and culture and is very different to the rest of Algeria 🇩🇿, being more conservative with strict adherence to ancient customs and Ibadi Islam (Maliki Sunnism is practised in many other parts of Algeria).

It is strictly forbidden to photograph 📸 people in the ancient parts of the towns. Women often wear modest traditional clothing, covered in white, except for one eye, and there is an intense focus on preserving Ghardaia's unique culture over modern influence.

We spent the day walking around two of the ancient towns, visiting the Ghardaia market and a palemerie. 👣

For dinner we had fermnted milk with dates 🥛🌴, Ash Ahlabid (typical soup) 🥣, Maghlouga (stuffed semolina pancake 🥞, Ouchou n’tini (couscous with dates sauce) 🌴

Yesterday was a full day of driving from Timimoun to Ghardaia with a few stops on the way, including the market of Timimoun🚗🚗
We checked due to a lovely guesthouse and then went for a walk around the area, admiring the centuries-old canal system and many wells designed for arid conditions.💧

Traditional chakhchoukha for dinner, a festive dish made of small pieces of dough / bread served in a rich tomato-based sauce 😋

After our unexpected night in Adrar, we waited for our police es**rt 🚔to pick us up. They took our passports and es**rted us for about three hours across the desert roads 🏜️🛤️

Once in Timimoun, we were handed back out passports and allowed to leave without a police es**rt. 🛂
Security is taken very seriously here and that's not a bad thing at all!

We checked into the lovely Dar Sanasa and explored the surrounding desert area with the villages and ksars, caves and irrigation channels. 🏜️
The adaptation of the local population to their environment is impressive!

We found a lovely sunset spot where we had typical tea ☕ and snacks. The tea-making was identical to that in Mauritania 🇲🇷 and the final product was just as good!

For dinner we had Doara (traditional Algerian lamb tripe stew) and camel meat. 😋

Adventures in Algeria! 🇩🇿

Our trip in Algeria is pretty intense and we're expecting very little sleep 😅

The reason I'm here is because my trip to Afghanistan 🇦🇫 was cancelled a few weeks ago, so I turned to Plan B.

Luckily I found lovely travel buddies to join me on a trip to Algeria 🇩🇿, and we quickly applied for a visa authorisation which was only issued the day before I left for the trip 😅😅
That was pretty nerve-racking!

So on our second day here we were supposed to fly into the oasis town of Timimoun. 🌴
Our flight was cancelled just before boarding due to a sandstorm 🏜️ in the area, and this really messed up our itinerary because there are no flights on the following days. ✈️✈️

We managed to get onto a midnight flight to the sandy town of Adrar. Our passports were taken away upon landing and we were es**rted by police to a hotel... only then did we get them back.

This morning we are hoping to arrange a 3-hour car transfer to Timimoun 🚗, and to hopefully rearrange our itinerary there to make the most of our shortened time!

Snaps from being stranded at the airport without a flight and to finally getting on a flight, even if to a different destination!
