Ocean color first behaves like a mirror of the sky. But it also has a filter, created by the organisms living in it.⁠

In productive waters, like the Norwegian Sea in summer, phytoplankton and nutrients turn the sea green under a clear sky, grey under clouds.⁠

In oligotrophic (low-nutrient) waters, like around the Azores and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, there's little to filter the light. The water mirrors the sky instead: royal blue on a sunny day, darker blue under clouds.⁠
⁠
Same ocean, different biology, different light, different blue. Depth, seafloor, and sediment play a role too, but sky and biology make the biggest difference.⁠

Global North-South income gap has widened dramatically

The income gap between the global North (the advanced economies of the core) and the global South (the developing economies of the periphery) has increased by between 170% and 270% since 1960, according to a study by ICTA-UAB, recently published in the journal New Political Economy.

Vasijas de cerámica revelan cómo las desigualdades sociales también se cocinaban en el Brasil del siglo XIX

Pescado, marisco, maíz, mandioca, arroz o incluso huevos de gallina. Los restos moleculares conservados en más de 180 vasijas procedentes del sur de Brasil han permitido reconstruir qué cocinaban distintas comunidades hace más de un siglo y muestran que el acceso a los alimentos variaba según el origen y la posición social de sus habitantes.

Más del 90 % de los nutrientes que degradan el Mar Menor proceden de flujos subterráneos recirculados

Más del 90 % de los nutrientes clave que degradan el Mar Menor, como el amonio, el fósforo y la sílice, no llegan a través de las ramblas ni las aguas subterráneas continentales dulces, sino a través de un mecanismo hasta ahora ignorado: el agua de la propia laguna que se infiltra en los sedimentos y vuelve a emerger cargada de nutrientes acumulados durante años.

Así se desprende de un estudio reciente llevado a cabo por el ICTA-UAB y liderado por Júlia Rodríguez Puig, que cuestiona las actuales estrategias de restauración del Mar Menor, que no contemplan esta vía de contaminación.
