Fiji’s bamboo industry is taking root.
This feature from GGGI Pacific highlights the opportunity to develop bamboo for sustainable construction, rural livelihoods, land restoration and climate resilience.
Building a successful industry will require communities, landowners, government, researchers and businesses working together across the complete value chain.
Follow Bamboo Fiji as we help connect the people, knowledge and practical work driving the sector forward.

🎋 Ahead of World Bamboo Day on 18 September, we’re highlighting the people helping grow Fiji’s bamboo story.
Meet Arno Roos, founder of Pacific Ark and an advocate for regenerative approaches to land, nature and communities.
Based in Vanua Levu, Arno has been working with the Global Green Growth Institute - GGGI and Fiji’s Ministry of Forestry, Fiji through the Fiji Bamboo Adaptation and Mitigation Project to explore how bamboo can contribute to sustainable construction, rural livelihoods, land restoration and climate resilience.
From mapping Fiji’s bamboo industry and documenting traditional knowledge, to strengthening harvesting and treatment practices and exploring new construction applications, the work is helping build connections across communities, government, research and industry.
For Arno, the vision is simple:
“Let’s plant more bamboo, let’s get the community involved, and let’s create a rural industry.”
At Gaia Earth Estate in Vanua Levu, that vision is already taking root, with bamboo being grown and prepared for future construction and demonstration.
As Fiji looks toward a more climate-resilient and sustainable future, bamboo could become more than a natural resource. It could become part of a local value chain creating opportunities for communities, landowners, businesses and future generations.
