OpenAirInterface (OAI) Foundation is excited to announce the First OAI Foundation U.S. Hands-on Workshop taking place from 17-19 November 2025 at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Foundation’s mission is to address the growing need for open source-based reference implementations of 5G/6G technologies and continually invest in training a highly skilled workforce for the U.S. cellular wireless industry. This first U.S. workshop is part of that effort — a concrete step to deepen engagement with the U.S. research and developer community and promote the use of OAI as a reference platform for 5G, 6G, and AI-native networks.

Program: The event will open on Monday (November 17) with a full day of presentations, including keynotes from leading voices in the wireless industry and academia, panel discussions, technical talks, and live demos showcasing the latest OAI developments. The following two days, November 18 and 19 will be dedicated to hands-on training sessions. During these sessions, participants will work directly with the OAI technical leaders to deploy and configure its software components, explore various use cases, and engage in technical discussions.

This workshop is designed for those who work with the code, test it, contribute to it, and deploy OAI for their use cases. We encourage students and those interested in enhancing their skills in OAI to attend the event.

Demos & talks proposal: We invite you to share your work and contributions through demos and/or technical presentations of your use cases. Selected submissions will be included in the workshop program.
Please submit your proposal here (https://openairinterface.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Demotalk-form-OAI-Foundation-Texas-workshop.pdf) before September 1st, 2025.

The full agenda will be shared soon.

We look forward to seeing you in Austin this November.

We are pleased to announce the successful integration of the Fronthaul Management Plane into the OAI source code. Our primary focus has been on enhancing Configuration Management between the OAI DU (nr-softmodem) and commercial O-RUs.

With this integration, the DU connects to O-RUs, retrieves their capabilities (including RF parameters, compression methods, and interface configurations), subscribes to PTP synchronization state changes, and configures the CU planes.

Our testbed has been successfully validated using Benetel O-RUs (RAN550 and RAN650, version 1.2.2) across various MIMO configurations (4x2, 4x4), bandwidths (40 MHz, 100 MHz), and a multi-RU setup enabling an 8x8 distributed antenna array.
This advancement enables full automation of O-RU configuration without the need for manual intervention. The O-RUs require the OAI DU's public key for authentication, while the OAI DU only needs the IP addresses of the O-RUs.

The fronthaul integration has been optimized by configuring all O-RUs, awaiting confirmation, and then initializing xran (O-RAN SC FHI library) based on the retrieved O-RU information.

We are eager to expand our Management Plane further to support additional commercial O-RUs and to explore hierarchical and hybrid architectures in collaboration with the SMO.

Dear Community,

We invite you to Chapter Fourteen of the OAI Webinar Series: “OpenAirInterface for FR3 Experimentation" on March 19th at 15:00 CET. Allbesmart, OAI Associate Member, will present this webinar.

Secure your spot by booking your ticket here: https://bit.ly/43E2YBK. Registration is free but required.

Abstract:
FR3 (7.125–24.25 GHz) is emerging as the "golden band" for 6G, offering an optimal balance between coverage and capacity. Regulatory bodies, including the ITU, are evaluating FR3 for cellular communications alongside existing incumbents such as satellite communications and fixed wireless access. Meanwhile, 3GPP has begun refining parameters for FR3. Advancing research in FR3 requires comprehensive end-to-end testbeds for dynamic spectrum-sharing validation, coexistence studies, and interference analysis. In this webinar, discover how the OAI stack is uniquely positioned to support researchers and developers in accelerating 6G innovation in FR3, shaping future standards and regulatory frameworks.

Agenda:
1) Introduction to FR3 as the “golden band” for 6G
2) The need for experimentation in the FR3 band
3) The role of the OAI stack in FR3 experimentation
4) The OAIBOX FR3 with the Pi-Radio frontend platform
5) The NI USRP platform for 6G experimentation
6) Live demo of the OAIBOX FR3
7) Q&A session

Dear OAI Community,

OpenAirInterface is pleased to announce its summer workshop on May 21-22, 2025, hosted by Ericsson at its prestigious headquarters in Kista, Sweden. This event is the first gathering of OAI experts, developers, researchers, and the broader OAI community to explore the needs we expect OAI to fulfill for 6G and AI-driven networks.

Of late, the OAI leadership and team have closely watched and participated in various gatherings of the 6G and AI research communities. Several researchers are already leveraging OAI for their work in different ways. At the same time, a broader consultation with these communities is essential to understand how leading open-source projects like OpenAirInterface can serve the community’s needs for 6G and AI-driven networks.

Defining the technical capabilities required for an AI-native 6G reference implementation is critical to shaping OAI’s roadmap and reinforcing its role as a key enabler for future wireless networks. This workshop will provide a platform for experts and contributors to exchange insights, share technical advancements, and help steer OAI’s development in response to these evolving needs.

The workshop page (https://bit.ly/4hUyS1k) will keep updating with the agenda and registration information. Stay tuned.

We thank Ericsson for hosting the OAI community at one of the greatest temples of cellular wireless technology and look forward to seeing you in Kista in May 2025.

Dear OpenAirInterface Community,

As 2024 draws to a close, we thank you for your continued support and contributions to OAI. This year, we achieved major milestones in the stability and feature-coverage of the OAI stack.

Background work this year was done to make the OAI stack a 6G and AI-ready software serving as the complete reference implementation for 6G research.

Looking ahead to 2025, OAI will provide initial implementations and deployments to enable relevant data collection for AI research, a hard problem. This step is essential in understanding the true value of AI in cellular communications and the study of business cases that are being presented as new revenue opportunities for CSPs. The OAI team and community are committed to providing an experimental AI research platform to enable such studies.

It is time for a well-deserved and welcome break. We wish you a Merry Christmas, a joyful holiday season, and a happy transition to 2025.
