⚡ Does the end of summer really mean the end of lightning risk?

A study analysing 215 lightning-related human accidents across 20 European countries over the last decade confirms that most accidents occur between May and August, with a peak in July accounting for nearly 30% of annual cases.

However, although less frequent, lightning-related accidents continue to occur throughout the year, including during autumn and winter.

The research highlights another key finding: 9 out of 10 accidents were not associated with sudden or unpredictable thunderstorms. Most accidents did not occur during remarkable or severe weather events. In fact, a majority were associated with moderate convective situations, reminding us that every thunderstorm can be dangerous.

The study also found that slow-moving thunderstorms were responsible for nearly two-thirds of the accidents analysed. The difficulty in accurately assessing their movement, combined with a likely reduction in vigilance as the event progresses, may contribute to risky behaviours.

In this context, real-time lightning observations provide valuable information on thunderstorm location, evolution and movement. This information helps organisations monitor the persistence of the threat, avoid resuming operations too early while lightning activity is still ongoing nearby, or conversely, prevent unnecessary delays when the thunderstorm has already moved away from the area.

⚡ New on the Meteorage Online Shop: PTWS Evaluation
As part of the IEC 62305-2:2024 standard, a Thunderstorm Warning System (TWS) can be taken into account in the lightning risk calculation of a site when it complies with the IEC 62793:2020 standard.
To evaluate the effectiveness of this system, the standard relies on one value: PTWS.

To support engineers, consultants and lightning protection specialists, Meteorage now provides PTWS, FTWR and PODx indicators, calculated from 10 years of lightning observations.
✅ Aligned with IEC standards
✅ Immediate online access

Discover the new PTWS: FTWR and PODx Evaluation service on our online shop: https://www.meteorage.com/solutions/ptws-ftwr-podx-evaluation/

For Lightning Alarm subscribers, the indicators are calculated using the current operational configuration already deployed on the protected site.

🔎 les rapports d'impacts post-événement pour comprendre et documenter les incidents ;
=📈 l'amélioration de la disponibilité et de la résilience des actifs renouvelables.

Au plaisir de vous retrouver à Paris !

🍽️ Thank you to everyone who joined our Lunch & Learn with RECASE Regenerative Energien GmbH at !

Today's discussion was built around a series of real-world lightning events affecting wind farms and one central question:
How can lightning data 📡📊 support better operational decisions, throughout the wind farm lifecycle, from exposure assessment and worker safety to inspections, maintenance and insurance claims?

Among the key lessons shared:
🌩️ Lightning is not a seasonal risk
🔎 Damage is not always immediately visible
⚡ Current intensity alone is not enough to assess risk
📍 The location of a turbine within a wind farm influences its exposure
🔬 A lightning flash is far more complex than it appears

Thank you to all participants for the excellent questions, discussions and feedback.
📍 Meet us at Stand 10H34 or contact our team to learn more about lightning risk management for wind energy assets.

⚡ Lightning is one of nature’s most complex and fascinating phenomena. While millions of lightning flashes occur every day around the world, some rare events challenge our understanding of atmospheric electricity.

On 6 November 2025, an exceptionally powerful lightning flash over the Toulouse region generated hundreds of reactions on social media and widespread coverage in national and local media.

At first glance, the event appeared exceptional due to its brightness, intense thunder and unexpected occurrence over a densely populated area.

A recent study published in La Météorologie revisits this event through a comprehensive analysis combining lightning detection data, observations, radar measurements and atmospheric electric field monitoring.

Co-authored by Stéphane Pédeboy (Meteorage) alongside researchers from the Université de Toulouse, CNRS, IRD and AGH University of Krakow, the study reconstructs the lightning flash and the thunderstorm environment that produced it.

The research reveals that the flash combined characteristics of both a superbolt and a spider lightning, propagating over nearly 100 km and lasting approximately 3 seconds within a large mesoscale convective system.

One of the study's key findings is that the flash developed within the thunderstorm's stratiform region, far from its most active convective core. A reminder that the most intense cloud-to-ground flashes do not necessarily occur where the thunderstorm appears most threatening.

Beyond this exceptional case study, this work illustrates the importance of combining scientific expertise, high-quality lightning observations and long-term datasets to better understand how extreme electrical discharges develop and propagate within large thunderstorm systems.
