We’ve been closely involved in the development of the integrated building services system for a new affordable home prototype by Makar.
For this prototype to work as a genuine model, (particularly in deep winter), ventilation, heating, cooling and domestic hot water needed to be considered as a single, integrated system rather than separate add-ons.
The system combines ventilation with heat recovery, a heat pump and hot water storage, and required early involvement, research and coordination to ensure the building behaves as intended: quiet, stable, fresh and comfortable with minimal energy input.
Credit to Makar for the progress they’ve made over recent years and for investing in a real, working prototype to test what affordable housing can achieve when fundamentals are prioritised.
This is building science in practice — not something that can be added at the end.
