Which agriculturally significant pear-shaped aphid can be seen below with ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ง๐š๐ž 1.3 - 1.5 times the length of their body, two dark spots at the base of the ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฉ๐ก๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข and short green ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐๐š?

Get to know your APHIDS!

Do you recognise this aphid species?? The ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฉ๐ก๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข are a big giveaway for this one ๐Ÿ˜‰ This agriculturally significant aphid tends to have a darker body colour, ranging from yellowish to green to black. With an overall size of 1.2 - 1.8mm, its body is oval shaped and the ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ง๐š๐ž are no longer than the ๐œ๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ (pair of small upright backward-pointing tubes). The ๐œ๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ข๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ are short and black, and the ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐๐š (tail-like structure) are characterised as short. These aphids are often tended to by ants!

Which agriculturally significant pear-shaped aphid can be seen in the pics below? Here's some clues..... their ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ง๐š๐ž are 1.3 - 1.5 times the length of their body, they have two dark spots at the base of the ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฉ๐ก๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ข and short green ๐œ๐š๐ฎ๐๐š. Waxing at the doorway can indicate that the hive is active and building up resources, while guard bees on duty show that the colony is strong enough to defend itself.

If you see both, itโ€™s a good sign that the hive is doing well and ready for the season!
