Recent events in the Middle East and Ukraine are a reminder that energy issues do not stay local for long. Businesses across Northern Ireland and Ireland remain exposed to volatile fossil fuel markets, while globally the shift towards clean energy is accelerating fast.

For many businesses, the question is no longer just about reducing carbon. It is about reducing exposure, improving resilience, and bringing more certainty to future energy costs through solutions like solar PV, battery storage and heat pumps.

We recently delivered a major on-site solar PV system for in Magherafelt, with 304 panels on the factory roof and a further 49 on the office building.

The system includes 165kW of solar panels connected to 116kW inverters and is expected to reduce electricity usage from external sources by around 40%, with an estimated payback period of approximately three and a half years.

A welcome update for solar and battery storage in Northern Ireland goes live today. But the detail matters.

The new G99/NI Fast Track route is a positive step, because it opens up more flexibility for solar and battery storage projects. The exact details are still being finalised, but it is looking like this.

It is important to understand that this is not simply a case of 60A per phase across the board. Total Installed Capacity will be 60A per phase.

Under the updated fast track criteria, the maximum export limit (MEC) remains at 16A per phase, and to qualify, the generator and battery storage must have separate inverters, each with a maximum of 32 Amps per phase.

NIE Networks says this still translates to export of 3.68 kW for a single-phase supply or 11.04 kW for a three-phase supply. However, a Compliant Export Limiting Scheme (ELS) will still be required, limiting inverters' combined export to a total of 3.68kW per phase.

In other words, the change improves what can be connected, but the system still needs to be properly assessed from the outset. A study will still be required, and the installation can only go live once NIE Networks has approved the connection.

For homeowners, farmers and businesses looking at solar with battery storage, this could create new opportunities, provided the system is designed around the connection rules as well as the site itself.

If you are exploring an installation and want clear advice on what now qualifies under G99/NI Fast Track, speak to our Engineering Team.

Geothermal heat networks are becoming an increasingly important part of the conversation around low-carbon heating, especially for housing developments, apartment blocks and multi-building sites🌍♨️

They work like a gas network, but instead of mains gas pipes supplying fossil fuel, heat networks use geothermal boreholes and shared pipework to give each home or building access to renewable heat from the ground.

The benefit is not just lower carbon. Heat networks can help reduce infrastructure requirements, lower operating and servicing costs, and create a more efficient long-term energy strategy for developments where a single-building approach may not be the best fit.

They can also be designed to work alongside other renewable technologies, including solar PV, air source and hybrid systems, which is where an integrated engineering approach really matters.

We’ve already seen heat networks brought to life in projects such as the Lisnafin apartments in Strabane for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and a communal geothermal heating system for Rural Housing Association Limited in Randalstown.

If you’re exploring low-carbon heating for a larger site or development, speak to our Engineering Team about whether a geothermal heat network could be the right fit.

Thinking about renewable energy for your business, but not sure where to start?

For most commercial projects, the first step is not choosing panels or equipment. It’s understanding the site.

⚡ How much energy do you use?
⚡ When do you use it?
⚡ Which solution is most likely to deliver the best return?

That’s why every project should begin with a proper survey and a feasibility-led approach. Get that right, and the rest of the system has a much better chance of performing exactly as it should.

We've made good progress this week at Our Lady's Care Home in Belfast, with the other roofs now panelled.

Care homes have an ideal usage profile to optimise savings from solar.

With most businesses lowering their usage over the weekends, the generated solar energy can be wasted. However, with a 24/7 usage pattern, such as care homes, there is very little wasted energy, resulting in better savings and a shorter return on your investment.

Get in touch if solar energy is something you are considering for your care home or business.

From mounting rails to finished solar installation at Our Lady’s Care Home in Belfast.

This was a great project to be part of, and the before-and-after really shows the transformation.

Although this was a commercial install, it’s a good example of how solar can be integrated neatly onto a residential-style building too.

What do you think of the finished result?

Solar battery storage lets you store excess solar energy generated during the day and use it during peak demand periods when electricity rates are highest.

This helps businesses cut costs, reduce reliance on the grid, and get more value from their system ☀️🔋

If you’re already using (or considering) solar, battery storage is well worth a look. Get in touch for a free feasibility assessment ⬇️
