If you're new to my page, I'm Gary! 👋👨‍🏭

I've been welding and fabricating for many years, working on everything from small repairs and one-off projects to commercial site work and aerospace components.

I started sharing my work on here to give people a bit of an insight into what life as a welder is really like. The early starts, the challenging jobs, the tools I use and the things I've learnt along the way.

But there's another reason I'm passionate about sharing what I do, and that's encouraging the next generation of welders.

We're facing a real shortage of skilled tradespeople, and I think it's so important that young people know there are fantastic opportunities outside of the traditional university route.

Welding has given me so many opportunities over the years, and I'd love to help more people discover what this trade has to offer.

Whether you're thinking about getting into welding, just starting an apprenticeship or already learning the ropes, I'm always happy to share advice, answer questions and pass on a bit of what I've learnt over the years.

I'm still learning things myself, even after all this time! 😂

So if you're new here, welcome! Expect plenty of welding, honest tool reviews, behind the scenes of my jobs and hopefully a few useful tips along the way.

And if I can encourage even a handful of young people to give welding a go, then sharing all of this will have been worth it. 👍

What a fantastic day! 👨‍🏭

I had the opportunity to spend most of the day at a local school, talking to the students about welding, showing them a bit about what I do and hopefully encouraging a few of them to consider it as a future career.

And I can honestly say I loved every minute of it!

I've been welding for many years now, and one thing I'm becoming more and more passionate about is passing on what I've learnt to the next generation.

There's so much more to welding than people might realise, and I think it's really important that young people get the chance to explore skilled trades and see the opportunities available to them.

Not everyone wants to go down the university route, and that's absolutely fine. There are some fantastic careers out there for people who enjoy working with their hands and learning practical skills.

The teachers were brilliant, the school was so welcoming and it was a real pleasure getting to share my trade with the students.

A massive thank you to everyone involved for giving me this opportunity. I'm genuinely grateful, and if I've managed to spark an interest in welding for even one student, then that's a day well spent! 👍

Hopefully, there'll be plenty more opportunities like this in the future.

A little update on something I've been really excited about! 👨‍🏭

A few weeks ago, I shared that I was putting together a welding course for youngsters who are interested in learning more about the trade, and the support I've had since has been brilliant!

I'm pleased to say that all 6 places are now fully booked! 🙌

I've also had some fantastic support from businesses helping me make this happen.

Elite Fabrication & Welding Ltd have kindly supplied all the metal the youngsters will need to practise on, and I've also had brand new welding helmets, overalls and gloves donated by R-Tech welding equipment & consumables to make sure everyone has the right protective equipment.

Code A Weld have even supplied some goodie bags for everyone to take home with them!

My workshop might not be the biggest, but there's plenty of room to give them an introduction to arc welding, MIG welding and TIG welding, along with the all-important health and safety side of things.

At the end of the course, everyone will receive a certificate of attendance too.

I've said it before, but we really do need to encourage more young people into skilled trades. If I can give these six youngsters a chance to try welding, learn something new and maybe even inspire one or two of them to pursue it as a career, I'll be more than happy.

A massive thank you to everyone who's supported this so far. It really does mean a lot, and I'll keep you updated on how the course goes! 👍

PART 2: Even on holiday, I can't stop looking at the welding! 😂🚢

Another little throwback to our cruise earlier this summer. This was filmed on our last day, while we were docked in Rome, and I wanted to show you just how much welding goes into a cruise ship.

We were travelling on a Princess cruise ship, and honestly, everywhere you looked there was something that had been welded!

The railings, the structures, even the sunbeds. And that's just the bits you can actually see!

When you think about the sheer size of these ships, imagine the amount of welding involved in building and maintaining them.

We hear a lot about the shortage of skilled welders, but this is exactly why we need more people coming into the trade.

There's always going to be something that needs making, repairing or maintaining, and welding is used in far more places than people realise.

So if you're thinking about getting into welding, it's definitely a career worth considering. You never know where it might take you! 👨‍🏭

You never quite know what's going to turn up at the workshop! 😂

This time it was something a little different. A completely handmade, one of a kind motorbike! 🏍️

The owner needed a couple of stop blocks welded into place for the back wheel. Nothing too complicated, just a small job that needed doing properly.

But it wasn't so much the welding that made this one interesting. It was the bike itself and the story behind it!

Always enjoy meeting people who have put the time and effort into building something completely unique.

One of the things I love about this job is the variety. One day I'm repairing commercial kitchen equipment, the next I'm working on a custom built bike! 👨‍🏭

How much welding actually goes into a cruise ship? 🚢👨‍🏭 PART 1

Earlier this summer, I went on a cruise and, as you can probably imagine, I couldn't help myself from looking at all the welding! 😂

When you think about the size of these ships, it's incredible how much welding goes into building them. And it's not just the main structure either.

From the railings and staircases to the sunbeds, fittings and all the little details you probably wouldn't even notice, there's welding everywhere you look.
And that's before you even think about all the maintenance and repairs needed to keep a ship like this running!

My wife was probably hoping I'd switch off from work for a week, but once you're a welder, you can't help noticing these things. 😂

Just goes to show how important skilled welders are, even in places you might not immediately think about.

And I've got plenty more to show you in Part 2! 👀

This gate was hit by a skip lorry, leaving the top bracket damaged and the frame bent. Not exactly something you want to leave hanging around! 😬

As soon as I received the photos, I could see it was a safety risk. The gate could potentially fall at any time, so I rearranged my workload to make this a priority.

Now, I could have ordered a new top bracket, but by the time it arrived and was colour matched, the gate would have been left unsafe for much longer than necessary.

Instead, I was on site the very next day, welding the bracket back into place and straightening up the frame. All repaired, secure and looking as good as new. 👨‍🏭

Sometimes it's not just about getting the welding done. It's about finding the safest, quickest and most practical solution for the customer.

Another job sorted and one less thing for the customer to worry about! 👍

Sometimes the job isn’t about repairing something that’s broken. It’s about making it work better for the people using it every day. 👍

I occasionally get asked to modify equipment at McDonald’s to make life a little easier for the staff, and this one was a fairly simple job.

They needed more usable worktop space around the sink, so had this fabricated, an extension and then welded it into place on site.

Simple idea, but it still needs to be done properly. It needs to be strong, neat and look like it was always part of the original equipment rather than something that’s just been added on.

Nice little modification and hopefully one that makes their working day that bit easier. 👨‍🏭

Another early start with the ESAB 👨‍🏭

This one meant a 2:30am start. Over an hour’s drive to site, then a bigger job that needed to be finished before the store started getting busy for breakfast.

Thankfully, everything went to plan and I got it finished and ready in time. 👍

A big part of what I do isn’t just the welding. My customers rely on me to turn up on the day and time we’ve arranged, get the job done properly and work professionally around their business.

And the day definitely didn’t finish there 😂

Straight back in the van and onto the next one. This was only the first of 6 jobs that day.

The ESAB is certainly getting put through its paces!
