A lot of people think you need to buy the most expensive welding equipment on the market to get a decent result. You really don't.

I've worked with plenty of expensive, top end machines over the years, but price isn't everything. I've also used more reasonably priced machines from and they've been more than capable of producing a good weld.

This is a 210 AC/DC machine and I've done a few of these joints with it now. Nice clean welds and more than capable of doing the standard of work I need it to do.

At the end of the day, you can't always blame the machine 😂 A lot of it comes down to the person using it.

Practice, learn and build the skill. A more expensive machine won't do that bit for you.

It's finally time to start sharing my thoughts on the new ESAB set.

This is Part 1 of the series, and rather than giving my opinion straight out of the box, I wanted to use it properly on real jobs first.

Over the next few videos I'll be sharing my honest thoughts, what's impressed me, what I've found works really well, and if there's anything I think could be improved. No tool is perfect, but so far I've been really pleased with how it's performed on site.

Hopefully these videos will be useful if you're thinking about buying one yourself.

Part 3... job done.

The new balls are welded on, sprayed up and ready to go. Just in time too, because the drive-thru was about to open for the breakfast rush.

It's another one of those jobs that people probably drive past every day without giving it a second thought, but keeping these barriers in good condition helps protect both vehicles and the restaurant.

Another early start, another repair completed, and on to the next one.

And remember... check your balls! 😂

You know that feeling when you put a brand new screen protector on your phone and suddenly everything looks crystal clear again?

That's exactly how I feel when I fit a new lens to my welding helmet.

It's one of those small things that makes a big difference. Better visibility means better accuracy, less eye strain and a much nicer day on the job.

Sometimes it's the simplest jobs that make the biggest improvement.

Part 2... here's the repair in action.

On the face of it, replacing a few missing balls on a height barrier doesn't look like a big job, but it's still one that needs to be done properly. A solid repair means it'll stand up to plenty more knocks from vehicles in the future.

These are the sort of jobs I enjoy. No fuss, no shortcuts, just turning up, making a safe repair and leaving it better than I found it.

Every job matters, whether it's a major fabrication project or a simple on-site repair like this.

One bit of advice I'd give to anyone leaving school, college or university...

Don't just sit back and wait for a job to come to you.

Get out there. Visit industrial estates, engineering companies and fabrication shops. Knock on doors, introduce yourself and ask if they've got any opportunities. It shows initiative, and trust me, employers notice that.

There are hundreds of businesses out there that never advertise vacancies because they haven't needed to. Sometimes all it takes is being the person who walks through the door at the right time.

You never know where that conversation might lead.

Don't wait for opportunity... go and find it.

After a day of grinding and welding, there's one job that makes a big difference before I head home... blowing all the metal dust off.

It keeps the van a lot cleaner, stops metal dust getting everywhere and, more importantly, helps avoid filling the washing machine with metal fibres... which definitely keeps the wife happier! 😂

I've been using the Milwaukee M18BLHSB-0 Precision Blower for this and it's become one of those tools I use far more than I expected. It's compact, powerful and comes with me on site all the time.

I get a lot of my Milwaukee kit from UK Planet Tools. Great prices, great customer service and always been spot on.

What tool do you own that turned out to be far more useful than you expected?

It's not always the biggest jobs that need the most thought.

This one started at 4:45 in the morning at another McDonald's. I was replacing the missing balls on the height barrier, a fairly small repair, but that doesn't mean you cut corners.

Before I even got the tools out, the safety cones went down. It might seem a bit over the top for a quick job, but protecting yourself and everyone around you always comes first.

No matter how big or small the repair is, the approach stays the same. Do it safely, do it properly and get the job done right.

Safety first... every single time.
