Most South Wales homeowners don't notice damp until it's already spread behind the walls.
Here's what to look for before it becomes a major health and financial problem. Damp is one of the most common — and most misunderstood — issues in South Wales homes.
With our weather pushing over 1,100mm of rainfall a year in many areas, Welsh properties are under constant pressure from moisture. And the damage rarely announces itself with a bang, it creeps up.
Here are the five warning signs our surveyors see most often across Cardiff, Bridgend, Newport, and the Valleys:
1️⃣ Tide marks or staining on the lower sections of walls — usually a sign of rising damp working its way up from the ground.
2️⃣ A persistent musty smell in a room, even when windows are open.
3️⃣ Peeling or bubbling wallpaper, especially near skirting boards or chimney breasts.
4️⃣ Black mould appearing in corners or on external walls — often misidentified as a ventilation problem when the real cause is penetrating damp.
5️⃣ White powdery deposits (efflorescence) on brick or plasterwork — a telltale sign of moisture moving through masonry.
If you're seeing any of these, don't just redecorate over them.
A professional damp survey will identify the source, the extent, and the right fix — saving you from treating symptoms rather than causes.
