Progress on Our Latest Project!
We hit an unexpected twist during the foundation work for this extension. The original plan was to build on simple footings, but as the excavation work began, we discovered the house was sitting on a raft slab. After some digging (literally!), we found out this was because the site was historically an old waste ground. π
In areas like these, decaying organic material can create voids underground, so a raft slab is ideal. It helps the whole structure move together, minimizing any impact on the main building.
This meant the extension also needed a raft slab, which we designed to handle not just the structure but also the maze of underground utilities we uncovered! We had to make sure the slab could be built without putting any load on these services while keeping it strong enough to hold everything together.
Good news: the design has been approved by the building inspector, and weβre back on track with the build! β
