Last Friday saw the Handover of 10 Units to our client SNG - Sovereign Network Group The project built under a JCT design and build contract was for 10 new 2 and 3 bedroom Timber Framed dwellings (5 shared ownership and 5 affordable rent) a fantastic project in Chapel Row, Reading with properties benefiting from air source heat pumps and PV panels. Below are some great shots of the site from handover last Friday.

Celebrating 140 Years.

This year R J Leighfield & Sons celebrates 140 years of trading. A milestone we are incredibly proud to have achieved.

The business was formed by Richard James Leighfield in 1885 operating from 1 Witney Street in Swindon. Richard had 3 sons (Arthur, Richard and James) who all learnt their trade under their father. Arthur Leighfield was actively engaged in the day to day running of the Company and James would manage the workers.

Arthur’s son (Maurice Leighfield) joined the Company in August 1948. Maurice was formally appointed Managing Director on 27th May 1960 an office he held until 30th May 1998 when he retired and was succeeded by Simon Leighfield.

Simon is still Managing Director of the business and oversees the day-to-day operations of the company.

Robert Leighfield who is the 5th generation to join the business joined in 2012 where he holds the position of Company Secretary/Director

Today R J Leighfields operates out of Royal Wootton Bassett covering all aspects of building from Affordable Housing, Luxury Homes, Complex Refurbishments, Industrial Warehousing, Schools and Sports Facilities.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the incredible team of people that work for R J Leighfields, who, without them the name and business doesn't live on.

And a big thank you to all our clients, sub-contractors and suppliers that have worked with us over the past 140 years and continue to work with us today.

A fantastic evening sharing some great success stories from construction companies across Swindon. We were privileged to have been nominated and incredibly pleased to have won 'Best Commercial Building' with our design partners David Brain Partnership

The £33.5m urgent and emergency care expansion at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was one of the winners at this year’s Swindon Building Control Local Building Excellence Awards.

The awards, which took place at the Civic Offices in Euclid Street yesterday (11 June), celebrated the best in technical innovation, sustainability, safety and design.

Mayor of Swindon, Councillor Fay Howard, handed out awards in 12 categories from small extensions to large housing developments. And £200 was raised during the evening for the Mayor’s two charities, The Harbour Project and Wiltshire Treehouse.

33 Years,
‘Mr Reliable’
Keith Williams Retires

After 33 years with the business Keith Williams has decided to take his well earned retirement.

In 1978 Keith joined the company as an Estimator/Surveyor, he spent 6 years with the business before an opportunity came up to allow Keith to freelance as a QS/Estimator. During this time Keith still worked on projects with R J Leighfields, and he even refers to this period as “I never really left”

In August 1997 Keith returned to R J Leighfields after a chance meeting with Simon Leighfield in a local pub. Simon worked with Keith for all his 33 years with the business, and states to this day, Keith never failed to get a tender out the door, always someone I could trust and rely on. An incredible achievement and testament to the man he is.

Keith's tenure with R J Leighfields has seen him work directly with 3 generations of the Leighfield family and for the past 12-18 months he has taken a step back from chief estimating duties to spend more time at home with his wife Val and their dog.

Keith was someone who always had the welfare of the company in the forefront of his mind, and for that the Leighfield family are very grateful for his service.

Everyone at Leighfields wishes Keith a long and happy retirement.

Over the next 12 months we will deliver 6 new classrooms, a commercial kitchen and a new hall with associated landscaping works for our client Westonbirt School & Westonbirt Prep. The build is highly sustainable with heating and hot water provided through renewable energy sources and has been designed to provide a contemporary interpretation of the historic buildings surrounding the site.

Have you seen our building work to create new accessible bungalows in Moredon and Walcot? 🚧

As part of the Council’s commitment to building a better, fairer and greener Swindon, two projects are working to create properties which have accessibility and sustainability in mind, addressing a shortage of adaptable housing in Swindon.

In Ashley Close in Walcot (top image), the work to build three new three-bedroom homes is nearly complete and it is expected that these properties will be available for tenants to move in to in January 2025.

Meanwhile, in Ventnor Close in Moredon (bottom image), construction on eight two-bedroom homes is continuing to progress with the first timber frame now up, while the parking area is now completed.

Both projects are being built with the latest energy-saving technology to ensure these homes not only support accessibility but also help residents save on energy costs while reducing their environmental impact.

A multi-million pound project to create a dedicated youth centre in Swindon is underway and is expected to be open next spring.

We are transforming the inclusive facility at the currently empty Lyndhurst Centre in Park North thanks to £3.8m in funding from the Youth Investment Fund. When complete, it will have enough capacity to support more than 400 children a week.

Fully refurbished by local contractor RJ Leighfield & Sons ltd, local youth support services, SMASH Youth Project, Friends of STEP and WAY Swindon will work in partnership to deliver much needed services and opportunities.

Young people have also been involved in the project from the start, advising on the types of activities they would like to see in the centre to keep those that use it engaged.

Among the facilities on offer will be:

• a hair and beauty hub
• kitchens with teaching facilities
• two music booths for solo artists and bands
• a gym
• counselling spaces
• a youth club facility
• an alternative education facility
• Accessible services for those with special educational needs and disabilities

There will also be activities for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and opportunities for young people to engage with local training and employment opportunities in the Borough.

We are pleased to announce that RJ Leighfield & Sons have secured the contract for refurbishment of The Lyndhurst Centre in Swindon for Swindon Borough Council

The centre will provide open access youth services for all children in Swindon including, Music; Cooking; Beauty; Health & Fitness and Informal Education.

The centre will also provide youth provision and activities for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
