This week, we’re excited to welcome Prof. Alex Liu, Professor of Paleobiology in the Earth Sciences Department at the University of Cambridge, for a fascinating talk on the origins of animal life.

Prof. Liu’s research explores the mysterious fossils of the Ediacaran Period (around 580–539 million years ago), a time when the earliest recognizable animals first appeared in Earth’s oceans. By combining fossils, sedimentary rocks, minerals, and geochemical records, his work helps uncover how ancient environments shaped the evolution of early life.

In this talk, he will dive into the strange and fascinating Ediacaran biota, the oldest fossil evidence of animals. From remote fossil sites to surprising discoveries in the rock record, Prof. Liu will explore how animals evolved, diversified, and eventually came to dominate life on Earth.
