Our planet is a dynamic system and we are only beginning to understand how fast it is changing 💡

From wildfires and storms to shifting oceans and changing climates, the systems we depend on are constantly in flux 🔥

The question is: how can we see those changes earlier and understand them better?

For the past few years, scientists and engineers at Frontier Development Lab (FDL) have been exploring how AI can help, by bringing together researchers from AI, Earth science, and engineering to tackle real planetary challenges.

In 2026, that work takes its next step 📈

This year’s research is gathering a new set of research challenges:

🌍 Mixture of Earths: leveraging on the explosion of foundation model capability, this challenge will develop a novel adaptive switch-out system to produce a transparent, uncertainty-aware estimate of Earth systems as a Mixture of Experts, addressing critical gaps in areas like carbon reporting and land use.

🌳 Living Forest: building a complementary multi satellite AI foundation model focused specifically on global forests and biomass, this challenge aims to understand how the Earth’s living systems function and how they respond through the lens of carbon capacity, resilience, and ecosystem dynamics.

🌀 Tropical Cyclone Thermodynamics: addressing the gap in predicting rapid storm intensification, this challenge will create a novel multimodal AI model that fuses 3D cloud morphology with temperature, precipitation and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) wind speeds for the first time.

If you're a PhD or postdoctoral researcher interested in working at the intersection of science, AI, and real-world impact, applications are open to join FDL Earth Systems Lab 2026.

Going back to the Moon isn’t just a rocket problem 🚀

It’s also a data and intelligence problem 🛰️

Today, some of the most important work in space exploration isn’t happening inside a spacecraft, it’s happening in the data; FDL Lunarlab.ai explores how applied AI can support the next era of lunar exploration.

In a powerhouse partnership with Luxembourg Space Agency and industry partners Google Cloud, NVIDIA, and Scan Computers, researchers collaborate to develop tools that help scientists better understand and operate on the Moon 🌖

Frontier Development Lab research regularly contributes to peer-reviewed journals in Nature Science Advances and major conferences including AGU, and NeurIPS 💡

Applications are now open for PhD and postdoctoral researchers to join FDL 2026.

If you're curious about applying AI to real scientific challenges and helping shape the future of lunar exploration, we’d love to see your application.

The frontier is calling. Will you answer? 📞

AI is everywhere right now.

But beyond the headlines and hype, there’s a quieter question:

How can AI help us understand the complex systems that shape our Earth and our future? 🌍

Each year, researchers at FDL Earth Systems Lab explore that question by applying AI to real scientific challenges.

From disaster response to extreme weather, the goal is simple: connect cutting-edge AI with the scientists working on some of the most important problems of our time 🚀

Working alongside partners including European Space Agency, Google Cloud, NVIDIA, and Scan Computers, teams develop research that regularly contributes to peer-reviewed journals and major conferences such as AGU and NeurIPS ✨

And most importantly, it helps scientists better understand the systems we depend on.

Applications are now open for PhD and postdoctoral researchers to join Frontier Development Lab 2026 🤝

If you're curious about working at the intersection of science, AI, and real-world impact, we’d love to see your application.

Can we help a Foundation Model to say “I don’t know”?

Wouldn’t it be great if ChatGPT told you when it was fibbing? Foundation models for science require a much higher level of fidelity. This research aims to reliably assess where a model is likely to perform poorly in advance. Join us to find out how they did.

Can we build 3D models of a cyclone to better understand their destructive potential? ☁️

For the past 8 weeks, our 3D Clouds team has been diving into that question by pushing the boundaries of AI, atmospheric science, and satellite data to create volumetric models of storms that could change how we forecast and understand extreme weather.

Tomorrow, they will be sharing their findings at the FDL Earth Systems Lab AI State of the Art Showcase, with predictions that could support a wide variety of scientific use-cases: from better forecasting of hurricane intensity, to more discriminative cloud classification or a more nuanced understanding of how deforestation affects cloud cover and type and ultimately more accurate climate projections (where clouds are the biggest source of uncertainty.)

These are the kinds of breakthroughs that remind us: responsible, thoughtfully-applied AI can be a guide to a resilient future 🌏

Can we use ML onboard to identify pollution from space?

For the past 8 weeks, our Starcop 2.0 team has been exploring that question, pushing the limits of AI, physics, and satellite data to detect subtle but critical signals in Earth’s atmosphere.

This Friday, they’ll be sharing their findings at the FDL Earth Systems Lab AI State of the Art Showcase, diving into how multi- and hyperspectral data can be used to identify hard-to-detect phenomena like greenhouse gas leaks or other atmospheric anomalies.

It’s the kind of work that reminds us that technology, when applied thoughtfully, can help us build a more accountable and resilient future.

We call this NIO or Network Intelligence in Orbit.
